The Abbey Park Eagles will have a chance to defend their provincial high school girls' volleyball title. Abbey Park qualified for the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations AAA tournament with a 3-1 win over Hamilton's St. Mary Monday in the Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference final. Four days earlier at Sheridan College, the Eagles repeated as Halton Tier 1 champions with a 25-18, 25-20, 25-18 win over the Georgetown Rebels. "Even if we didn't have the best athletes, I think our connection would have still done it," said Sarah Williams, who was a member of last year's provincial AAA champion squad. "The thing people say about us is that we look like we're having fun." The OFSAA tournament will be held March 9-11 in Ingersoll. Webb going to volleyball provincials The Garth Webb girls' volleyball team will participate in the AA championships March 9-11 in Dryden. Webb was 6-4 during the regular season and lost to eventual Tier 1 champion Nelson in the playoffs. According to Halton high school convener Darrin Curtis, the Chargers are the only AA school in the region that agreed to make the 1,700-kilometre trip to Dryden if offered the opportunity. King's qualifies for OFSAA basketball King's Christian Collegiate is Oakville's only representative at OFSAA basketball this year, qualifying for the A tournament with a 60-33 victory over Brampton Christian Monday. The Cavs, who also defeated Lester B. Pearson 57-53 last week in a Halton qualifier, will travel to Pain Court (near Chatham) for the tournament, which starts next Monday. White Oaks wins Tier 2 hockey Jared Schutz scored the shootout winner as the White Oaks Wildcats defeated the Assumption Crusaders 5-4 to win the Halton boys' hockey Tier 2 championship Friday at Sixteen Mile Sports Complex. White Oaks carried a 4-1 lead into the third period but Assumption stormed back with three straight goals, including the equalizer with 2:34 left in regulation. "My heart dropped. I said, `No way, don't tell me it will be a collapse.' I was really worried," said White Oaks coach Dave Rideout. Schutz, Ollie Green and Conor Zalin scored in the shootout for the Wildcats after a scoreless overtime period. Sam Wilson (two), Dallas Taylor and Brady Holloway scored for White Oaks in regulation time and Mike Bradshaw earned the win in net. Coverage of the Tier 2 final and video footage of Schutz's winner can be found online at bit. ly/1DUybws. Loyola claims girls' crown in OT The Loyola Hawks claimed the regional girls' hockey championship Friday, defeating the Notre Dame Fighting Irish 2-1 on Jade Thompson's overtime goal. Thompson, who provided 39 of Loyola's 50 goals this year, scored in the opening minute of OT on an end-to-end rush while the Hawks were on a 4-on-3 power play. 33 | Thursday, March 5, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com "Jade is a Team Ontario rugby player and a Team Ontario field hockey player," said Hawks coach Dave McNamara. "All the rep (hockey) teams are chasing her, but she wants to play high school hockey (the Halton league does not allow rep players)." Sierra Johnson scored Loyola's other goal, and Hawks goalie Jenna Culumovic kept the Irish off the scoreboard until Notre Dame tied it with 3:25 to go in regulation. The Hawks' hopes of qualifying for OFSAA, however, died Tuesday with a 7-0 loss to the Bishop Tonnos Titans in Hamilton. Loyola stunned Tonnos -- which features rep players -- 2-1 in a 12-round shootout in last year's GHAC final. Please be advised that it is NOT a touchscreen laptop. Tigers coach proud of team's win in GHAC semi continued from p.32 play goals 91 seconds apart in the middle period. But a tripping penalty on Blakelock led to Douglas's marker, and Tigers starting goalie Bradley Bezemer was temporarily forced to leave the game after being injured on Peruzza's goal. Bezemer returned to the crease a couple of minutes before Wood scored the winner. "It's an awful feeling when you feel you have the game in your grasp and it's taken away," said Blakelock head coach Ken Butler, who felt Bezemer should have been allowed to stay in the game and disagreed with several other calls that went against the Tigers. "We're a resilient team, but we couldn't handle too many of those issues that were out of our control." This season was the closest Blakelock has come to qualifying for OFSAA during Butler's 16-year tenure as the Tigers' coach. Blakelock gutted out a 2-1 win over Cardinal Newman Monday in Hamilton just to earn another shot at Abbey Park in the GHAC final. Brett Corbeth and Courage scored for the Tigers against Newman, while goalie Ryan Bell turned in a performance that made Butler consider starting him again the following day. "We went into a difficult situation and the guys handled it perfectly," Butler said. Last Friday, Abbey Park's Spencer Verdurmen scored a power-play goal in the final minute of the first overtime period to give the Eagles a 4-3 win in the Halton Tier 1 final. Chris Boushy, Colin Semple and Matt McLachlin scored earlier in the game for Abbey Park, with Ben Bernier, Luke Corbeth and Courage responding for Blakelock. The OFSAA boys' hockey AAA/AAAA championships will take place March 9-12 in St. Catharines. Abbey Park did not qualify for the playoff round at last year's tournament, which took place in Oakville and Burlington.
