Pencil in Pam Am relay celebration June 23 Residents can bring their community spirit to the downtown's Centennial Square when the Pan Am flame arrives on Tuesday, June 23. The stopover is part of the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games Torch Relay. Plans are in the works for a community event with details to be confirmed in May. "We are very excited to be included as a stop in the Pan Am Games Torch Relay," said Mayor Rob Burton. "I encourage everyone to save the date and invite their friends and family to celebrate this international event honouring athletes both in our community and around the world." The torch relay begins its 41-day journey when the Pan Am flame is lit during a traditional Aztec lighting ceremony at the Pyramid of the Sun in Teotihuacan, Mexico before landing in Canada on May 30. Approximately 3,000 torchbearers will carry the flame through more than 130 Ontario communities. The torch will see more than 60 modes of transportation and travel more than 5,000 kilometres on the road and 15,000 kilometres by air. It will visit six Canadian Forces bases, a national and provincial park and five First Nations communities before lighting the cauldron at the Opening Ceremony in Toronto July 10. A separate Toronto 2015 Parapan Am Torch Relay will take place prior to the start of those games on Aug. 7. Details on the route and torchbearer applications will be released in April.
