Local players in basketball nationals Loyola high school graduates account for three of the five-player Oakville contingent that will play in this week's Canadian Interuniversity Sport men's basketball championships in Toronto. Mike L 'Africain of the Ottawa GeeGees, Mike Andrews of the Bishop's Gaiters and Ostap Choliy of the Ryerson Rams all played a role in Loyola's dominance of Halton senior boys' basketball from 2009-11, a tenure during which the Hawks won three Tier 1 titles and two provincial silver medals. L 'Africain and Andrews will renew acquaintances once again today (Thursday) as Bishop's takes on Ottawa in one of four CIS quarter-final contests scheduled on Day 1 of the tournament. L 'Africain, a fourth-year point guard, averaged 12.3 points and 4.8 assists per game during the regular season while shooting 45.5 per cent from three-point range. Fifth-year centre Andrews had 15 points and six rebounds in a 68-63 win over McGill in Saturday's Quebec final after averaging 11.9 points, 5.6 rebounds and 1.8 blocks during the regular season. Choliy and the Rams will take on the University of Windsor in their opening game. Choliy, a fourth-year guard, scored five points and added four rebounds in Ryerson's 79-66 loss to Ottawa in the Ontario bronze-medal game Saturday. Abbey Park graduate Chris McLaughlin (Victoria) and former Holy Trinity student Anthony Pate (Carleton) are Oakville's other competitors at the CIS championships. Victoria will face Dalhousie today and Carleton will clash with Saskatchewan. Post player McLaughlin is nearing the end of a stellar five-year career at Victoria, averaging 19 points and 9.7 rebounds per game this season for the Vikes while shooting 56.1 per cent from the field. Potts' goal gave the Rangers a 3-2 semifinal series win over the Hurricanes, who had gotten the better of Oakville during the South Central Triple A regular season. Oakville dropped the series opener, won the next two games and then saw Halton even the series in Game 4. "Playing Halton was a roller coaster," said Rangers coach Mike Bentivegna, whose team led Saturday's contest 2-0 before Halton rallied to tie the game late in regulation. "We were outplayed in overtime, but the players never quit and ended up scoring an ugly goal to win. I was so proud of all the boys and they showed a lot of character by not quitting when most players in their situation would have." At this weekend's OMHA championships in Whitby, Oakville will face the host Wildcats, defending champion Ajax-Pickering Raiders, Richmond Hill Coyotes and SCTA rival Brampton 45s. Other OMHA tournament participants Also competing in an OMHA tournament this weekend are the minor midget AAA Rangers, who are travelling to Quinte.
