Mayor's alleged misconduct won't be investigated, council rules by Michael Gregory Oakville Beaver Staff 3 | Thursday, March 12, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com A second integrity challenge against Mayor Rob Burton, in the wake of last fall's municipal election, was recently quashed by Town Council. The complaint, supported by eight affidavits, sought adjudication by an integrity officer. It will not proceed after being voted down 10-1 by council on Feb. 23. The latest attempt to have allegations of misconduct against the mayor forwarded to the Town's Integrity was brought by unsuccessful mayoral challenger Gordon Brennan, who filed the formal documents Jan. 21. "I do not make light of the seriousness of any of my complaints. They are based on facts, and anecdotal evidence," Brennan said, appearing as a delegate before councilors voted on the item. Burton removed himself from the council chamber during Brennan's submission, as well as during council deliberations. In part, Brennan's affidavits discussed Burton's State-of-the-Town address on Sept. 22; a campaign sign showing the mayor wearing his Chain of Office; the Burton campaign's purchase of Oakville Transit bus ads during the lead up to the Oct. 27 election; and allegations that the Oakville Mayor Rob Burton, left, sits beside mayoral challenger Gord Brennan at last fall's Oakville Chamber of Commerce election debate on Oct. 1. As part of an affidavit submitted to the Town Clerk, Brennan alleged that Burton attempted to have input on moderator selection prior to agreeing to participate in the debate. | Oakville Beaver file photo inside today's Spotlight Health Beaver Trails Beaver www.insideHALTON.com 6 26 28 Arts Sports Classified 30 32 35 For home delivery & customer service call 905-631-6095, 5300 Harvester Rd., Burlington New subscriptions call 905-631-6095 or subscribe online at www.oakvillebeaver.com Pharmasave Drugs, Metro, Allstate Insturance, Bulk Barn, Reitman's, Bath Depot, Rona, Nature's Source, Real Canadian Superstore, No Frills, Lowes Canada, Michael Angelo's, Food Basics, Royal Windsor Pub, Benefits of Beauty, JYSK Bed & Bath, 2001 Audio Video, Scan Decor, Hudson's Bay Co., Leon's Furniture, National Sports, Home Outfitters, Fortinos, Pro Hockey Life, Shoppers Drug Mart, Michael's, Canadian Tire, Bouclair, Staples, Longo's, Beddington's Bed & Bath, Rexall, MD Medical, Pharma Plus, The Source, The Brick, Walmart, Toys-R-Us, Future Shop, Best Buy, Reliance, Drug Trading, Sobeys, Freshco, Brick Mattress, Sears, Centennial Windows Burton tried to have the selected moderators of the Oakville Chamber of Commerce debate changed. Several emails were submitted by Brennan to support his allegations. Despite the majority of his submissions having to due with the election, Brennan said he made them first and foremost as a long-time Oakville resident. "The election of 2014 is over. I'm not holding any grudges," he said. "You, our Oakville council, are our oversight. You can collectively decide to stomp on my affidavits, or have them read by the commissioner." Ward 5 Town and Regional Councillor Jeff Knoll motioned to receive the item, but take no further action. Knoll was the only councillor to speak to the item prior to voting. He drew comparisons to integrity complaints submitted to the Town by defeated mayoral candidate John McLaughlin. The majority of council voted at a Dec. 22 council meeting not to proceed with complaints sent to the integrity officer by McLaughlin, a former federal lawyer. "I believe these complaints are in many cases... some of them are the same, some of them are vexatious, there's basically no basis for them whatsoever..." Knoll said. "I'm satisfied once again, as last time, that this is simply an attempt to extend the campaign, continue the attacks," said Knoll, who also spoke to and discounted the challenge brought by McLaughlin when it appeared before council.
