www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, March 13, 2015 | 12 Eddie Williams to make his 39th St. Paddy's Day walk St. Patrick's Day is a day of traditions and while many folks will be celebrating all that is Irish Tuesday (March 17), Eddie Williams will be carrying on an Oakville tradition that dates back to 1922. Williams will once again hop aboard the GO Train and then make his way to Toronto's City Hall where he'll set out on a 42-kilometre walk to a bar in downtown Oakville. This will be his 39th trip to keep a Canadian tradition alive. Williams said it all began when a group of prohibition-weary Irishmen made the trek from Toronto to Oakville in search of bootleg green beer. The traditional walk was continued by Charlie Priestman and followed by Barney Heard, before it was passed onto Williams. The ritual has become something for which Oakvillians, and others, recognize Williams and look forward to -- residents are also invited to join 63-year-old. Former Oakville, now Hamilton, resident Raychyl Whyte said she will be taking part for her ninth time this year. Over the years, Williams, who dons a Toronto St. Pat's hockey jersey for the day, has been joined by some, who make the trek a challenge or do it as a fundraiser. However, Williams himself walks just to carry on the tradition. He will leave Toronto at 9 a.m. and will arrive in downtown Oakville at approximately 3:30-4 p.m. This year, Williams will end his walk at the Queen's Head British Pub, 118 Dunn St. Eddie Williams Do you have the CorreCt insuranCe Coverage?
