Blue Dogs won three straight OT games at OFSAA continued from p.22 Bourbonnais' overtime goal gave the Blue Dogs a 3-2 win over Sudbury's Notre Dame in Wednesday's quarter- nal. A few hours later, she delivered the winner again in a 2-1 victory over Ottawa's Louis Riel. That set up a meeting of the tournament's top two seeds in Thursday's nal. Appleby and St. Theresa needed no introductions. They faced off in back-to-back goldmedal games in 2011 and 2012, Appleby winning the rst, the Titans the second. They met again in last year's bronze-medal game, with Appleby winning. This year, both schools made the jump to the AAAA ranks. "We felt we had a really competitive team, so why not challenge ourselves," said Devereaux. "A lot of us didn't know what to expect, what level the teams were going to be," said Sisokin, who plays with Oakville Hornets' midget AA team. "We didn't focus on how they were going to play. We focused on how we were going to play." Devereaux said that meant playing winning 50/50 battles, playing defence rst, shooting and crashing the net, winning faceoffs, backchecking and trusting their teammates. But preparation also played an important role. After losing last year's OFSAA semi nal in overtime, Appleby made sure it would be ready if forced into three-onthree sudden-death play again. Prior to OFSAA, the Blue Dogs played an exhibition game against Burlington's Nelson High School. Before the game, they arranged to play a period of three-onthree and a shootout regardless of the outcome. That proved to be valuable experience when Appleby was forced to play an extra period in each of its playoff games. "We had a quiet con dence," Devereaux said, "a belief that every single one of us knew we could do it. And when we won one, we knew we could do it again. And when we won a second one, we knew we could do it again." Appleby might not have had the chance for a third overtime if not for a brilliant glove save by goalie Shelby Ryan in the nal minutes of regulation. "It was unbelievable," Bourbonnais said. "She deserved an assist on the (winning) goal for that." With just one graduating player, defenceman Emelie Robertson, the Blue Dogs will have a good chance of continuing their successful run at OFSAA. For now, though, they'll savour this year's gold medal. "Because so many of the girls played on the team that lost in overtime (in the semis) last year, we took that and used it this year," said Bourbonnais, who has committed to Cornell but has one more year at Appleby. "It's the best feeling to win and know that all the work and all the practices were worth it." Other members of Appleby's gold-medal team are: Amy Dobson, Jennifer Dumont, Julia Edgar, Julia Fitapatrick, Melanie Forbes, Brooke Jovanovich, Megan Laviolette, Annie MacDonald, Samantha McCluskey, Sydney McCluskey, Emelie Robertson, Jessica Smith, Emma Thompson and assitant coaches Whitney Eastwood and Kate Lane.
