Available in with black or white, the Chili is aimed directly at younger buyers who desire the ability of all-wheel-drive but in a package that approximates their lifestyle. At the heart of the Chili package is a Panasonic 200-watt sound system with AM/FM CD and MP3 player. With a remote control, the driver and pas sengers can work the sound to their heart's content. With MP3 technology, cramming 100 or so songs on a CD is no problem. It also has one of those removable face plates which means you can take the plate with you and thieves will immediately see the rest of the deck isn't worth stealing. And with the right sounds, you have to have the right look. The Chili is equipped with a new sportstyle grille treatment, hood scoop and headlights with black surrounds and 16-inch alloy wheels with tires that, strangely, pro duced a lot of road noise. But there is still more to the Chili package that adds $4,305 to the $23,095 base price of the RAV4. You also get cruise control, air Jim Robinson conditioning, power locks and windows, body colour bumpers and mir rors (heated), power tailgate lock and body side mouldings in body colour. A lot of stuff is already standard, like the digital clock, climate control, three-spoke sport wheel with tilt and oodles of storage spaces, tie downs and power points. Power is Toyota tested and proven 2.0-litre twin cam with sequential multiport fuel injection producing 148 hp and 142 lb/ft of torque. This engine is one of the most efficient fourcylinders on the market. It uses Variable Valve tim ing with intelligence (VVT-i) that optimizes valve opening times for maximum power as required, which in turn provides better fuel economy and less greenhouse gases. All this results in Transport Canada fuel ratings of 10.617100 km (27 mpg) city and 8.2L/100 km (34 mpg) highway. According to Transport Canada, it means the average Canadian can expect to pay $1,276 annually for fuel. Chili buyers can go with the standard five-speed manual or the optional ($1,200) four-speed auto matic. The autobox employs an engine control module that manages all shift decisions based on engine speed and load so that every shift is precise ROM) WORTHY Toyota is adding some spice to its 2003 RAV4 models with the Chili version that includes a 200-watt sound system with MP3 player. and seamless. It also adjusts over time for slight wear on parts so gearshifts retain the same crispness - so much so that the driver is never supposed to notice. Chili's all-wheel-drive system uses a centre dif ferential with a viscous coupling that distributes torque equally to the drive shafts based on which has the most grip. It is a simple system that won't allow deep-bush off-roading, but will more than justify itself in rain, slush and ice conditions. Suspension remains unchanged for 2003 with long-travel coil-over MacPherson struts at the front and dual wishbones with trailing arms and gas shocks at the rear. Brakes are discs at the front and rear drums with ABS and electronic brake force dis tribution (EBD) being an option worth having. Now you can option up a RAV4 to $34,260 with the $8,705 Package D with leather and the ABS package, but the funky little Chili was priced at a slightly more modest $29,860, including the hefty $1,260 shipping charge. As mentioned about the tires, the all-season rub ber fitted to the Chili made a heck of a racket on British Columbia's Route 7 area near Abbotsford. I'd have to think about another set of 'boots' espe cially when one of the reasons for buying it is to lis ten to the music. While it sits nicely high for improved forward vision, passing is something you do only after mak ing sure the oncoming traffic is far away. It's not that the engine and drivetrain aren't willing, it's the fact the power is "adequate" but nothing a nice V6 wouldn't cure. Around town and for regular highway commut ing, the RAV4 is a great choice because of the fuel economy and the abilities of the AWD that can make Canadian winter driving to work and back such a drag. I can also see this as a great weekend getaway to the cottage car because the AWD system lets you travel down a gravel or earthen road and also provides lots of cargo area. Behind the back seats there is 23.9 cu. ft of cargo room and 67.4 cu. ft. with the back seats folded flat. Ground clearance is 170 mm (6.8 inches) and the vehicle has the abil ity to seat five comfortably. A drive back to Vancouver gave co-pilot Graeme Fletcher a chance to remote to his heart's content with the MP3 player. The remote itself is a very tiny affair with more buttons than I know what to do with. This is a system where you can read the man ual, or ask the neighbour's kid if he has five minutes to spare to show you how to use it. While it isn't exactly cheap, young buyers are just as conscious of Toyota's reputation for longevi ty and build quality.
