D2 - The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday, October 2, 2002 Ron Mays closer to NHL dream Ron Mays is moving one step closer to realizing his dream of coaching in the National Hockey League. The 27 year-old Burlington native, and former coach with a Oakville Rangers' peewee AAA rep team, recently accepted the position of goaltending coach and scout with the Mississauga Ice Dogs of the Ontario Hockey League. Mays is a key component in a new era of Ice Dogs' Hockey. In May of this year, the team was sold by a group including Don Cherry to for mer NHL player Nick Ricci. Ricci immediately installed former Tampa Bay Lightning head coach, Steve Ludzik, as the Ice Dogs' new general manager and coach. Mays was added to the staff through his past dealings with Ludzik. Mays' main responsibility is to train and develop the Ice Dogs' goaltenders. Mays will also play an active role in evaluating goal tenders for future OHL drafts. A former goaltender with the M.M. Robinson Rams Halton and GHAC champi onship team in 1993-94, Mays has extensive experience training goaltenders through his goalie school. Mays has also authored four best-selling books on goaltending. The Ice Dogs are coming off a last place finish in the OHL's central division where the team compiled an 11-47-6 record. High school sports off and running for 2002-03 season The Halton Secondary Schools Athletic Association high school sports schedule is under way. Assumption, Notre Dame and MM Robinson, all of Burlington, lead the senior divi sion I standings with identical 20 records heading into this week's action. Oakville's Iroquois Ridge sits tied for fourth spot with Burlington's Nelson. Both teams have 1-1 records. Loyola, Aquinas and Burlington's Lord Elgin occupy the division's bottom spots. None of those teams has a win so far this year. (See story on this page for a schedule of this week's games). In division II it's Burlington's Pearson and Central are on top with 2-0 records. Oakville's QEP is tied for third with Burlington's Aldershot, Milton District and Milton's Bishop Reding. Those teams have 1-0 records. White Oaks, OakvilleTrafalgar and Blakelock have yet to a win this season. It's a different story, however, in the junior divisions. Central and Nelson sit atop Division I with perfect 2-0 records. But O akville's lone entry in the division, Loyola, is a respectable 1-1. That record is good enough for a third-place tie with Elgin. In division two, it's Oakville schools Iroquois Ridge, Oakville-Trafalgar and Holy Trinity leading the way with 2-0 records. Blakelock and White Oaks are tied for fourth spot with 1-1 records. QEP and Aquinas share the division's bottom spot. Neither team has registered a win so far this season. Junior playoffs begin at the end of the month. The division II final is Nov. 12, followed by the division I final Nov. 13. Senior playoffs begin in November, culminating with the GHAC Bowl between Nov. 1530. Division finals are played in Hamilton at Ivor Wynne Stadium. GHAC Bowl will be played at York University. Burlington Oakville Trafalgar senior girls' field hockey team wins tournament The Oakville-Trafalgar High School senior girls' field hockey team won five games last Friday to capture the OTHS Senior Girls' Field Hockey Tournament. Vanessa Forster scored the team's only goal in a 1-0 win over Mississauga's Lome Park Secondary School in the final. O-T got to the final after winning four games and tying one in the preliminary round. All games were played at Shell Park. O-T beat Nelson 1-0 in their opening game then slipped past Laura Secord Secondary School 1-0. The O-T girls shutout Blakelock 4-0 in their third game, before beating Hamilton's Glendale 50.
