The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday October 2, 2002 - A5 MacLean in shock (Continued from page A1) career in 1978 in his home town of Red Deer, Alta., working for CKRD, the local radio station. In 1984 he was seen doing ad-lib weather reports and hired by Calgary's CFAC television to host Calgary Flames NHL games. MacLean jumped to the CBC in 1986 and took over as HNIC national host in 1987 after Dave Hodge was fired. MacLean quickly earned accolades for his hosting ability and witty rapport with Coach's Comer host Don Cherry. In addition to hosting HNIC, MacLean anchored CBC's coverage of the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, the 2000 Summer Games in Sydney, Australia, the 1998 Winter Games in Nagano, Japan and the 1988 Summer Games in Seoul, Korea. He's also hosted CBC's coverage of the Calgary Stampede, Pan-Am Games, Commonwealth Games and World Track and Field Championships. He's won four Gemini awards as Canada's best sports broadcaster. MacLean said he has already been contacted by other employers interested in his services, but that it's too early to make a decision on where he might end up if a new deal with CBC can't be reached. And, he's still a little shocked about leaving the CBC. "We w eren't operating on the assumption that this wouldn't get done," MacLean said. rthritis Is Serious Early treatm ent can make a difference. "That's not up for grabs," he said. "That cannot be changed." If one does the math, it's plain that the deal does not come without compromise: 500 of OTP workers with the m ost seniority will be offered attractive buy-out packages (including a $60,000 retirem ent incen tive) which Hargrove is con fident will be accepted, leav ing jobs for more junior employees with young fami lies, m ortgages and other obligations. More than 700 OTP workers are eligible. "I am very comfortable we will not have any layoffs at that site," said Hargrove. "A lot of the uncertainty of the people in Oakville will be gone. A lot of people will be incredibly relieved." Rather than be disman tled, explained Hargrove, the OTP will essentially be left dormant so as not to pre clude any opportunities for CAW President Buzz Hargrove future uses of the site over the next three years. Between 2005 and 2008 the future of the OTP is less certain, but Hargrove said he hopes that new investment will allow the plant to become what's known as a "flex" manufacturing plant, meaning a site which can readily adapt to changes in consum ers' tastes to offer the "world class production" of several vehicle models. This "vision" - which would likely require invest ment from various levels of government, said Hargrove could also create a climate in which Ford suppliers could locate right on the compa ny's Oakville property. Ford of Canada president Alain Batty was similarly pleased with the contract results and said it was a "great pleasure" to announce the OTP deal as well as $600 million worth of investment in the OAP to "revitalize" the plant and produce the new minivan. "Ford of Canada is strong but getting stronger because o f this agreem ent," said Batty. Ford vice-president of Human Resources Tim Hartmann said no detailed specifics of the new contract will be revealed until after workers hold their ratifica tion vote this weekend. Monday's deal also came as welcome news to O akville Cham ber of Commerce executive direc tor Laura Babcock. "We are very pleased about anything that keeps jobs in O akville," said Babcock, who explained that as her association's largest member, Ford has always contributed to the town in many ways. The Chamber was part of the stakeholders' task force that worked on the issue since the closure was announced and Babcock said they always held "high hopes" a resolution would be found. Now that a bargain has been struck, she said her organization plans to keep close tabs on the situation. Hargrove said he was "shocked" in January when Ford announced the OTP's closure but explained that it speaks well of the relation ship between the automaker and the CAW that a deal was closed 33 hours ahead of Tuesday's strike deadline. "I am absolutely elated Ford rose to the occasion and met the challenge," said Hargrove, adding that the agreement is great news for all Ford workers, their fami lies and Ford itself, which he says will be even more com petitive worldwide.
