Local youth delivers skates to others in Cat Lake community by Herb Garbutt Oakville Beaver Staff 21 | Thursday, March 19, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com It was a simple game of shinny, something most Canadians take for granted. But this game meant a lot to Jack Mogus, because it meant so much more to those on the ice with him. For the second year in a row, Mogus collected skates -- more than 100 pairs -- for a remote community. This time when Mogus went along to deliver the skates to Cat Lake First Nation, an Ojibwa community 550 kilometres northeast of Kenora, Ont., he took his own skates so he could join in the game. That was Jan. 31 and despite the frigid -30C temperatures, he joined players on the ice for a game. "The kids were so happy to get a pair of skates," the Grade 9 White Oaks student said. Meeting them and seeing the impact that it's having, you just felt so welcome there. I've stayed in contact with them and the experience has been unbelievable." Jack's sisters, Julia and Emma, have been sending books to Cat Lake and other First Nations communities through Books With No Bounds, the non-profit they founded. When the idea of skates was brought up, Jack decided to take on the project by forming his own non-profit, Change By YOUth. With New Central Public School and the Panago Pizza location on Neyagawa Blvd. helping to collect skates and other hockey equipment, Mogus had more than 50 boxes of equipment to deliver. Mogus was thrilled by how the community responded to the skate drive. "The generosity of the people who contributed was incredible," he said. "The kids in these communities are so isolated, there's no way they would ever be able to go buy equipment." Mogus said the skate drive is a great chance to raise awareness of some of the issues facing First Nations people. Mogus' trip will be feature in Charity Village's Unsung Heroes profiles. And though Mogus called it a once-in-a-lifetime experience, listening to the 14-year-old describe his trip up north, it wouldn't be surprising to see it happen again.
