The 36th annual Young Artist Awards ceremony was held Sunday in Los Angeles, Calif., and recognizes talented teen and child performers around the world. While nine-year-old Jaxon did not win the award for best performance in a voice-over role for young actors aged 10 and under, his father Derek Mercey says his family is "extremely proud" of all he has accomplished so far. He's a lot like me... he's funny and a good friend," Jaxon said of Prince Wednesday. "I like acting because I get to pretend to be someone else, and it's cool to see my name in the credits." When Jaxon was short-listed for the part, Derek says his son -- and the rest of the family -- was anxiously awaiting word if he would get the role. "I remember him coming home from school that day, he and his older sister Zoe walked in and I came into the foyer with a `knowing' grin on my face and he immediately lit up and blurted, `I got the Prince Wednesday part, didn't I?'" said Derek. "He could barely contain himself. I gave him a big high-five and he turned and nearly tackled his sister down with a massive hug. We were equally excited for him." In addition to his role as Prince Wednesday, Jaxon has appeared in commercials, such as Tylenol, Ford, Maple Leaf Foods, and Telus, as well as a student short film titled Estranged. He's also done voice-over work on cartoons Super Why! and Ella the Elephant. Jaxon was previously nominated for a Joey Award, a Canadian version of the YAAs, for his Prince Wednesday role. "The YAA nod was further validation that he's doing something he's got a talent for and that he loves to do," added Derek.
