It's like tripping back into a time gone by. O f course, there's nothing old-fashioned about roomy comfort.That's one aspect of big cars that's hard to beat. And the Chrysler Concorde has plenty of room to spare - easy four-door access, big American-style plush seats, leg room, elbow room, shoulder room, a total 3047 L (l 07.6 cu ft) of interi or volume. Comfortable stretch-out space for four with enough space left over for occasional six-passenger duty. And the trunk is huge - 530 L (l 8.7 cu ft). Big enough for any family vacation, golf weekend or Mafia business trip. The trunk comes with a cargo net and a pass-through, tucked behind the rear armrest, that allowed me to even squeeze in a few ten-foot two-by-fours from the lumberyard. The Concorde is based on the large LH frontwheel drive platform with trademark cab-forward architecture that pulls the wheels to the comers and maximizes impressive interior dimensions. And a lot of time and effort has obviously gone into raising the quality standards of that roomy interior and bumping up the luxury quotient. My tester, admittedly a top-of-the-line Limited version, featured a handsome two-tone interior, accented with wood grain detail on the dash, door panels and around the shifter, highlighted with fancyshmancy, chrome-ringed, chrono-style white-faced sport gauges. Chrysler's flagship large car has undergone a steady evolution of improvements since its introduc tion a decade ago. The Concorde comes in a choice of three engine strengths and three trim levels - LX. LXi and Limited. The Concorde LX harnesses a 2.7 L 200 hp V6 and starts with a pretty impressive package of standard equipment that includes: air conditioning; 16-inch aluminum wheels; 4 wheel disc brakes; power group; fog lamps; remote keyless entry with engine immobilizer; AM/FM/CD; tilt steering and steering wheel-mounted cruise controls. The Concorde LXi drops the old 3.2 L V6 motor, replacing it with a stronger 3.5 L SOHC V6 that makes 234 hp (12 horses more). It also adds: auto headlamps; leather-faced front seats; security alarm: upgrades to the electrical, cool ing, audio and HVAC systems; and the audio controls on the leather-wrapped steering wheel. I first saw these on the Jeep Grand Cherokee and, although some critics grouse about the buttons being on the back of the wheel and unmarked, I find the controls intuitively easy to figure out and use once you play with them for a while. The Concorde Limited bumps the content level up another notch or two. A "high-output" version of the 3.5 L V6 is essen tially the same engine as in the LXi, but it's tuned to make a few extra horses -250 hp @6400 rpm - on slightly higher octane midgrade gasoline. The Limited version does offer significant performance upgrades - 17-inch aluminum chrome-clad wheels with lower profile tires, speed sensitive power steer ing, standard ABS, traction control and a bright chrome exhaust tip to let everyone know your car honks. The Limited also fills out the luxury list with LHS interior appointments and luxuries: premium leather on heated power seats; a memory system; power folding heated mirrors; electroluminescent instrument cluster and the centrepiece analog clock. Not much to gripe about except for the usual cabforward complaint - like all Chrysler's the high rear deck and hunched forward aggressive stance makes for a sexy styling statement but also makes for lousy rear visibility. Be careful you don't back over the neighbour brat's bike on the driveway.
