10 - The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday October 16, 2002 Bantam grads try to carry on winning tradition at midget level By Steve Dominey SPECLKL TO TH E B E A V E R The O akville R angers m idget AAA rep team avenged their only loss of the season on Friday night against Hamilton, sending a message to the league that their championship streak may be far from over. After failing to advance to the play offs last year, the midget Rangers were hoping players from.the winning ban tam AAA rep team would move up and help bring the same success to their team this year. Last season, the bantam players won their third straight Ontario Minor Hockey Association (OMHA) cham United Way of Oakville Proudly Presents o F iv i A T I r ilV P C i A W O R LD W IT H IN O A K V IL L E SEE T H I W O R LD FOR O N LY $6 Saturday, October 19th, 11:00 am -1:00 am Experience other nations' culture, entertainment and food, without leaving Oakville! The core group of that team had played together for eight years, win ning the OMHA title five times and grabbing two silvers and a bronze the other years. However, the dynasty was unable to advance to AAA midget together this year as many of the team 's key players moved up to junior hockey, including to the Oakville Blades, who currently house four former players. It looked as if the eight remaining players (five defencemen, two for wards and a goalie) would not be able to carry their legacy to midget as the Rangers fell to the Hamilton Bulldogs by a score of 5-3 on Oct. 4. The league loss was the first in over a year-and-ahalf for the eight midget newcomers. But the Rangers quickly smothered any doubt they could win it all again, earning a hard fought 2-1 home victo ry over the same Bulldogs last Friday. Assistant captain Jeff Bentley scored twice in a hard fought defensive game that im proved the Rangers season record to 4-1-1. Oakville defencem an Ben Heersink, a first-year midget, called last w eek's home loss "a new experi ence." He says it will be a much greater challenge to win without the former teammates who moved up to junior hockey. "It's tough to get used to how other players play," says Heersink. "We were all used to each other [on the old team],, we all knew where each other would be on the ice because we played together for eight years." H eersink still believes his new team will be contenders once every one adjusts to playing together. "We definitely have a championship quali ty team," he says. "It's just going to take a bit more work." G raham Tough, parent of the Rangers' defenceman who bears the same name, was m anager of last year's bantam squad. He and his son have been around for the team 's last three cham pionships. Tough agrees with Heersink, saying the team will improve once they adjust to the bigger, faster, midget-level game. "A lot of the guys have moved on, but as long as these kids are willing to work together, they can win too*" says Tough. "This team will get better because they're responsible and disci plined, with a great work ethic." Rangers coach Shawn Hudson says because of these attributes, he expects nothing short of winning the OMHA cham pionship. The second-year Rangers coach says everyone is work ing hard to become better, a big differ ence from last year when he had trou ble convincing players to show up for practice on several occasions. "The first-year guys have made my job much easier," he says. "These players come from a setting that had a commitment to practices, to team mates and to themselves as hockey players." Rangers captain Steve Turner says it is this level of commitment that has made the team much better than the same one he played on last year. , "The new guys play hard and they bring experience," says Turner. "They definitely know how to win."
