The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday October 16, 2002 - 11 Blades serve up Holiday turkey Thanks, in part to injuries, the Oakville Blades served up a real big turkey over the Thanksgiving Weekend, dropping all three games. After a fast start out of the gate, the Blades are now losers of four in a row, but still very much in the thick of things in the provincial junior A hockey league's west division with an 8-5-1 record. They had another tough game last night (Tuesday) in Georgetown against the Raiders, which went beyond our press deadlines. They'll host Georgetown, in a rematch this Friday, 7:45 p.m. at Ice Sports. Injuries are plaguing Oakville, partic ularly between the pipes, and it showed on the weekend with the Blades allow ing 24 goals in the three games. The Blades were swept in their home and home encounter with the Burlington Cougars, losing 6-1 in Burlington on Sunday and 8-6 at Ice Sports on Saturday. The Blades kicked off the weekend on Friday, also at home, with a 10-4 loss to the Mississauga Chargers. The Blades four-game losing skid began the previous Monday with a 7-6 loss in Hamilton against the Kilty's. With back-up Anthony Santaguida already out with a concussion suffered in practice, starter Dan Giffin suffered a groin injury right at the start of the week end, in the first period against Mississauga. He hung on for the rest of the game but was replaced on Saturday by Oakville Rangers midget AAA call-up Matt Pike. Giffin, still not 100 per cent, was back in net Sunday. . Other players in Sick Bay include team captain Marc Pinizzotto, defender Matt Ruberto, and forward Dan Powers. "I believe that this is just a blip on the radar screen," said Blades coach Jay Anderson. "We'll struggle through the injuries right now and be stronger com ing out the other side. "It's nice to be fighting for first place, but as last year showed us, first place doesn't always mean much come play off time." In Sunday's 6-1 loss, the Blades, already contending with injuries, also had to contend with penalties, allowing four power play goals, including two in the final frame which erased any chance of overcoming a 3-1 deficit. The Blades found themselves twomen short, four times during the game. Fittingly, the Blades only goal came when they were shorthanded. The Cougars also added one shorthanded goal, meaning that only one goal in the game was at even strength. Saturday's game at Ice Sports was the closest of the weekend for the Blades, losing 8-6, the final goal into an empty net. In Friday's 10-4 loss against Mississauga, Oakville was in it to mid game when Mississauga broke open a 33 tie with a seven-goal barrage. The Blades had difficulties keeping up with M ississauga's speed as Oakville's defensive zone really started to come apart. "We need to get back to our systems, especially our defensive system," remarked coach Anderson. "The kids need to take more pride in defensive hockey."
