"I support this motion because I believe it's what's best for the community." The bypass is part of a $24 million reconstruction project for Bronte Road between the QEW and Hwy. 407. The re-directed roadway will leave the existing Bronte Road south of Palerm o and re-connect " The question just north of becomes do you Dundas Road. ram it through the A left-tum barricade existing community would also be or bend it around." constructed · Oakville councillor along Dundas Kevin Flynn Road to pre vent through usage of the existing Bronte Road. The existing roadway would be used main ly to service existing residents and future development. The re-construction project further involves the inclusion of four traffic lanes, several turn lanes and a treed median along the entire section of Bronte Road being re-constructed. Palermo Park would also require re locating. The decision to approve the bypass was nearly unanim ous, with Burlington councillor Mike Wallace expressing the only opposition. Burlington councillor Carol D 'Amelio, H alton Hills councillor John Day and Milton councillor Barry Lee were absent from the meeting. "I can't in good conscience support this. For me, it is a transportation route and that's the way it should be, not an urban road," Wallace said of the treed median and esthetic aspects of the roadway. "We have pavement on the ground and now w e're going to add more. That doesn't make sense to me." Numerous Palermo residents have championed the bypass during delega tions to regional committees and coun cil over the past month. "The main issue which concerns all the residents of the Village of Palermo is their safety. There have been two recorded fatalities and a few near miss es on this road with the traffic volume less than experienced at present," Piara Singh Roshan, of the Halton Sikh Cultural Association, told councillors. "Imagine the increase in the amount of traffic when the area has been fully developed and the QEW and Hwy. 25 interchange improved." While there wasn't any opposition delegates who spoke during the council meeting, concerns had previously been raised by a developer who owns lands which would be used to construct the bypass. Rickmar Holdings Inc. owns prop erty to the west of Bronte Road on which it plans to construct a residential development -- though there is cur rently an appeal before the Ontario Municipal Board on the issue. On the developer's behalf, Russ Cheeseman previously told councillors he believes the best option for road improvements would be to widen the existing roadway. The western bypass, he said, would also reduce the development potential of his clients land from 485 to 220 units. "The longer I take a look at this (bypass), it becomes simpler. There's an existing transportation need.
