The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday October 16/ 2002 - 5 Murron's Cabintree owner refuses to pay fine to get sign back (Continued from page 1) message, "Please don't park in front of the store, the Queen is in town and she said she might drop in." Murron's renowned bear, which was dressed like the Queen, was also standing by the sign, clear ly underscoring that the whole thing was a harmless joke. Famcombe -- who said he made sure the meter was paid up -- noticed two parking enforce ment personnel show up, who apparently notified the Town, which in turn sent a Public Works truck into which the sign was tossed. The truck then drove off without an explana tion given, said Famcombe. "That's as heavy-handed as you could possibly be," said Famcombe, who explained that if he hadn't seen who took it, he would have called police and wasted their time. The Town's parking depart ment could not be reached for comment as of press time. Famcombe then called the Town and was told that his sign had been impounded and it would cost him $30 to get it back - a penalty he refuses to pay. "It's absolutely stupid," he added. "Over the weekend at least 200 people asked where the sign was." This isn't surprising since the placard is a bit of local landmark and for more than a decade it's sat out front of Murron's embla zoned with slogans, jokes and sayings. Two years ago, Famcombe compiled the most popular "board wisdoms" into a book and raised $4,200 for the United Way by selling them. But Famcombe isn't finished with the Town just yet: he's started < i fund to buy Oakville's "parking enforcement types" a sense of humour and to that end, Murron's Cabinetree will accept donations until Nov. 30. The store will then match donations up to $2,500 and all money raised will be donated to the United Way. "You can't beat city hall, but you can make them look stu pid," said Famcombe.
