www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, April 2, 2015 | 16 T Adult crayoning an anxious world into a comfort and calm one brief, from all the mounting madness. Adult crayoning... it's a thing All of which naturally brings me to... crayoning. Speci cally, adult crayoning, which apparently has become a thing. Actually, according to The New York Times, it's become a big, booming thing. The newspaper says the trend can be traced to a woman named Johanna Basford, who created a book called Secret Garden: "a 96-page collection of elaborate black-andwhite ink drawings of owers, leaves, trees, and birds" that was published in 2013 and he more the world crayons -- er, paints -- us into corners, the more we need to escape. By any sane assessment, the world has gone cuckoo-bananas. You can't read a newspaper or turn on a radio, or television, or surf the Internet without being inundated (dare I say, assaulted) by doom and gloom. All of which leaves people desperately seeking escape -- a quiet, calming, creative, meditative means of lowering blood pressure, easing anxieties, anchoring us in the moment, and giving us a break, however That's Life Andy Juniper Guest Contributor Is your chIld a student athlete between the ages of 14 & 19? Let's do the math: the book has sold more than 1.4-million copies in 22 languages and topped bestseller lists around the planet -- in South Korea alone, it's sold an astounding 430,000 copies. The 31-year-old Scottish illustrator's followup, Enchanted Forest, was released last month and is on its way to selling out its initial print run of 226,000 copies. Who's buying all these books? Research reveals it's adults who like to take the artist's ink drawings and colour them. Effectively making Basford a modern-day rock star for the ACC (Adult Crayola Crowd). Popularity surprises author Surprised? Not half as much as the author, who admits: "I thought my mom was going to have to buy a lot of copies. When sales started to take off, it was a real shock." Nowadays, Basford receives fan mail. She regularly trends on social media as devotees post their crayon creations. But wait, the Times reveals there's more: "Hardcore fans often buy several copies of her book at a time, to experiment with different colour combinations." Oh, and "others have turned it into a social activity," replete with crayoners congregating in cafés for `colouring circles'. Apparently, it's all about returning to a simpler, gentler time of life. And you know me, I'm all about gentler and simpler times. Still, you won't nd me buying one of Basford's books and colouring until my heart's content -- or, at least until my heart quits skipping anxious beats over things like global warming. Why? Having been humiliated so many moons ago by a particularly harsh teacher who scolded me for never colouring in the lines, I lack all con dence in crayoning. No, colouring's not for me. That said, I'm inspired by Basford's work and by her followers. Consequently, as the world continues trending toward deeper doom and gloom, I'm contemplating pulling a Brian Wilson and building a sandbox in my basement. -- Andy Juniper can be contacted at ajjuniper@gmail.com, found on Facebook www.facebook.com, or followed on Twitter at www.twitter.com/thesportjesters.
