www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, April 2, 2015 | 32 OMHA title `Stanley Cup' for bantam AAs An Ontario Hockey Federation provincial championship remains a strong possibility for the Oakville bantam AA Rangers. But in head coach Jim Franko's mind, the team already reached the apex of its season when it won the Ontario Minor Hockey Association title last week. "The OMHAs, that's our Stanley Cup. That's what we play for," said the Rangers coach. "The satisfying thing about it is that you play best-of-five series, and typically in a series like that, the best team wins... You don't fluke your way through winning five-game series." There certainly wasn't much fluke about the Rangers' run through the OMHA playdowns. Oakville outscored the Niagara Falls Flyers and Ancaster Avalanche by a combined score of 23-7 to win six of seven games in the quarter-final and semifinal rounds, then defeated the Ajax Knights in a four-game championship series. Nolan Guertin provided the title-clinching goal, rifling a shot under the crossbar in overtime to give Oakville a 3-2 win last Monday in Game 4 of the final. The competitive series with Ajax was a rare -- and welcome -- test for the Rangers, who went 25-0-3 and averaged a four-goal margin of victory during the Tri-County regular season. Franko hopes for more of the same at the April 10-12 OHF tournament, which will feature champions from the Minor Hockey Alliance of Ontario, Greater Toronto Hockey League and Northern Ontario Hockey Association as well as the host Stratford Warriors. "We're really looking forward to the OHFs. One of our problems this year was that we didn't have any supertough hockey games until we got to Ajax in the OMHA final," Franko said. "The OHFs are really what they are, an elite tournament. It can come down to one game and anything can happen in one game... I'm dying to win OHFs because it would be just so awesome for (our players), but I recognize that it's a tournament. "Whatever happens at OHFs, we won the Stanley Cup. We're going to the OHFs with the intent of winning. But I mean, honestly, there's nothing like winning an OMHA championship." Also contributing to the Rangers' OMHA championship win were Ryan Radovich, Matthew Cvitak, Ben Ecclestone, Matthew Evans, Riley Fitzpatrick, Paul Franko, Samuel Gaskin, Jake Howden, Nicholas Ivanchenko, Daniel Littlejohn, Patrick Maloney, William McAllister, Evan McHenry, Lukas Radinovic, Jeffrey Rice and A.J. Sachdev. Tim Evans and Pat McHenry are assistant coaches, and Mike Radinovic and Craig Ecclestone are trainers. -- Jon Kuiperij Skier named club's MVP in final racing season Kieran Hussey concluded his competitive skiing career on top.
