I own a store in Downtown Oakville. Every day we get negative comments about the parking meters recently installed in the lots off Church Street. It is not uncommon to see a lineup several people deep waiting to use the machine. Why? Because they are extremely user-unfriendly. We have had people call to say they were so frustrated they gave up and drove away. There was a lady almost in tears who I had to help with the meter. It confused me too, but imagine an older person who may not be as familiar with technology and may not be able to read the screen as well. The whole process is too long. In the winter it is too cold to stand, gloves off, while you try to remember and then enter your licence number. How many people can remember their licence number without having to think about it for a bit or go back to their car and look? How New parking meters more likely to deter business from Downtown: store owner many times do we need to press the `valid' button...what is wrong with the word `OK'? What is meant by `standard rights'? Aren't we supposed to be making it easier to shop in Downtown Oakville, not harder? How did the business owners' request for support with parking incentives turn into higher hourly rates with no concessions? The Town of Oakville seems proud enough about the Downtown when it needs to appear so in promoting Oakville as a beautiful, viable town.
