Beware of high-pressure tactics: Halton fraud unit continued from p.15 They do this to maintain a relationship with you. They want you to think they care about you and are helping you, looking out for your best interests. These criminals almost always prey on our senior population or vulnerable members of the public. Where are these criminals? You would think to perpetrate such significant crimes (in some cases hundreds of thousands of dollars) they would have to live in your neighbourhood, but that's not the case. A fraud network is a multi-level criminal system, where the key participants may not even be in this country. With the advancement of technology, a fraudster can call or email you from anywhere in the world and spoof their location to mislead the recipient as to their actual whereabouts. They'll coerce you into sending them money by wire transfer or they have runners, who are willing to take the risk for a few hundred dollars compensation, to pick the cash up from you. You will never see or meet the actual flourishing fraudster as they have underlings that do all the heavy lifting for them. It all sounds scary, but with some common sense and awareness that these people are out there, you or your family members may never need to worry about it. Take extra precautions when communicating by telephone or email with anyone you are not familiar with and never send money through money wire services to people you don't know. Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC) (www.antifraudcentre.ca) is a great resource for anyone who would like more information on fraud prevention. The CAFC is the central agency in Canada that collects information and criminal intelligence on mass-marketing fraud, advance-fee fraud letters, Internet fraud and I.D theft complaints. `Recognize it.
