ILC Foundation hosting series of upcoming fundraising, awareness events The Oakville-based ILC Foundation is hosting a series of upcoming events in support of the work it does in improving the lives of children and families living with chronic pain. Its mission is to help children across Canada suffering from all chronic pain disorders get the treatment they so desperately need, through its peer-support network, one-on-one-support and other partnership programs it has in communities. "As a relatively new charity, our accomplishments are many, not the least of which is reaching more than 2,000 people to access ILC's resource network and to help them get the care they require by helping them access community-based care and navigate the health care system," said Sandy Smeenk, ILC co-founder and executive director. Earlier in March, the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care announced it would be investing $1.3 million in a new chronic pain treatment clinic for children and youths Sandy Smeenk through its Patient First: Action Plan for Health Care. The investment will also go towards developing a 21-day , out-patient program to help children suffering from ongoing pain, such as migraines, backaches, abdominal pain and tendinitis. The Pediatric Chronic Pain Network will include McMaster Children's Hospital; Hamilton Health Sciences Centre; the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario in Ottawa; Children's Hospital, London Health Science Centre; and the Hospital for Sick Children and Holland-Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital in Toronto. The Mask You Live In follows boys and young men as they struggle to stay true to themselves while negotiating America's "narrow definition of masculinity," stated a press release. The event is being putting on by Halton Women's Place, SAVIS of Halton and the Women's Centre at Sheridan College's Trafalgar Campus, 1430 Trafalgar Rd. The film is written, produced and directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom and it premiered at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival. "Just as our culture has harmed women and girls, so too are we harming our boys, which has led to a `boy crisis' in America," said Newsom. "Our intention is that this film sparks a national conversation around masculinity and helps our boys overcome limiting stereotypes, encouraging them to stay true to themselves." The documentary presents the personal narratives of young boys and men and features experts in neuroscience, psychology, sociology, sports, education, and media, further exploring how gender stereotypes are interconnected with race, class, and circumstance. Doors open for the screening at 6:30 p.m., with the film starting promptly at 7 p.m., followed by a panel discussion, including panellists: Jeff Perera, of the White Ribbon Campaign; and Angus Coll-Smith, of the Halton Equitable Drug Strategy. Tickets are limited for the event. For more information, contact Carm Bozzo at cbozzo@haltonwomensplace. com or 905-332-1200, ext. 222.
