O C TO B E R 30. 2 <K> 2 · Page D1 Tyler Anderson · Oakville Beaver Dana Segin's belated CFL debut continued for a second game -- but it was n't as memorable as the first one. Segin wasn't much of a factor, one way or the other, as the Ti-Cats were humiliated 28-7 by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. In for place-kicking duties, Segin also had to take over punting duties after the half when Paul Osbaldiston re-aggravated his injury. Segin again called into action by the Tiger-Cats Dana Segin probably w ishes his first CFL stint w asn't providing such a well rounded experience. Last Sunday he got to experience the `agony o f defeat' side o f pro sports as the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, needing a win to assure a playoff spot, were hum iliated at hom e 28-7 by the W innipeg Blue Bom bers. The 31-year-old, long-tim e O akville resi dent didn't have m uch work at all, with his sole field goal attem pt being blocked. The previous w eek in M ontreal, in his pro debut, Segin got to experience the `thrill of victory'. He was instrum ental in the Ti-Cats 29-26 win over the A louettes, with 17 points, includ ing a perfect five-for-fivp in the field goal departm ent and two extra point converts. Segin has been filling in for Ti-Cats star kicker Paul O sbaldiston who injured his right quadricep earlier this month. O sbaldiston was able to start S unday's game, but handling only punting duties. He re-aggravated his injury, however, and after the half came out in sweat pants with Segin taking over punting duties. Segin w asn't spectacular, shanking one punt attempt, but neither was he the goat. The Ti-Cats just didn't give him a chance to be much of a factor. Still, it was a bit o f a let down after his huge role in the previous w eek's win, he conceded. He may yet get another chance this season -- and if he does, it will be a playoff game. But a couple of things have to happen. First of all, the Ti-Cats, in order to qualify for post season, need the Toronto Argos to lose their home game next Sunday against the visit ing Calgary Stampeders (who have long since been knocked out o f the playoffs). And, second, the jo b is O sbaldiston's if he can utilize the two-w eek break to nurse him self back to health. Segin will practice with the Ti-Cats this w eek as they aw ait the outcom e o f this Sunday's game betw een the Argos and Stamps. Segin is a m em ber o f the O akville Longhorns senior m en's football team, which has won the the last three Canadian Senior Football League (CSFL) cham pionships and the last 10 N orthern Football C onference (NFC) titles. Segin has led the NFC in scoring, two of the last three years. Weekend wins halt Oakville Blades' losing streak at seven games By Sarah Elliott SP E C IA L T O TH E BRA VER The Oakville Blades finally m anaged to halt th eir near m onth-long losing skid at seven gam es with a pair of weekend wins -- 2-1 over the host M ississauga Chargers in overtime on Sunday and 5-3 over the visiting B ram pton Capitals on Friday night. It was a good end to a month which also started out on the right foot with a tie and a win. The m iddle part, however, was forgettable w ith the above noted seven game slide. T hrough it, the Blades struggled to keep players on the ice, betw een injuries and penalties. Through their slump they w ere averaging about 37 penalty m inutes per game. However, in both weekend gam es, they did th eir best Lady Byng im itations, cited for only five m inors and one fighting m ajor (in the M ississauga game). D iscipline hasn't been the only thing to im prove, though. The B lades saw a huge im provem ent in the defensive zone, allow ing only four goals in the two games. T h a t's com pared to the w hopping 56 goals over their seven-game losing streak. The Blades also addressed their injury problem, getting go altender C hris H yk from S treetsv ille to fill in for injured started Dan Giffin. In return, the Blades sent over O akville Blades defender Scott Russell. H yk, w ho w as born in 1984, played last year with Streetsville where he was a very solid goalie. He started out this year playing in Lansing, M ichigan before suiting up for the Blades on PROVINCIAL GP W HAMILTON 18 15 BURLINGTON 17 12 MILTON 15 11 GEORGETOWN 16 9 OAKVILLE 19 10 MISSISSAUGA 16 9 BUFFALO 19 4 BRAMPTON 16 5 STREETSVILLE 18 4 BRAMALEA 16 5 * Not including Tuesday Bramalea. "W e're hoping Chris can bring to Oakville what he did last year in Streetsville." "We need to keep tighten ing up on defence, and it gives the defence confidence to know that the goalie is there if they make a m istake."
