The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday October 30, 2002 - A3 Hot-off-the-press calendars have fans swooning (Continued from page A1) Kathie Brown, 23, of Waterloo, said Steve Knowles, Mr. August, won hands down. Her friend Jackie Hannivan, also 23, a McMaster University student, said her favourite was Bradley Sylvester, Mr. October. "We love firemen. It's a code red for us," she said. Then there were those who just couldn't decide. Kay Davison, of Burlington, who joined in the fun with three friends, named off four months that were her favourites. Her friend Karin Turner, 52, said she "came to see the hotties." Karen Tratt, 41, expressed her absolute adoration to Mr. November, James Dixon who was on duty at the time, but stopped by to say hello to the women anyway. But in the midst of talking she turned her page accidentally to Mr. January and had a change of heart. "Never was the new year sweeter. Glenn, oh my God! This is too much fun," she said. Janet Rakowski, 43, an instructor at Sheridan College who teaches team building, management and develop ment, said many of her students are fire fighters. "I'm here to support them. They do such a great job for the com munity. This is exciting. It's a great way to raise money and plus, they're adorable." Lisa Rolland, 35, a sales rep from Burlington tried to explain the fascina tion with firefighters. "It's the image of the hero. They'll save you. They're not egotistical, but very down to earth," she said. `Tell James (November) he can call me anytime," she added. Twenty-six year-old Mike Drexler, the March model, said he didn't do any thing different to get ready for the role. "I just kept on working out. It's great to raise money for charity. It's a lot of fun. It's in good fun." On the adoration from the women he commented, "I'm definitely single." Daryl Storey, 41, (February model) who is married 16 years with three kids, said his wife thinks his involvement with the calendar is great. On getting ready for the role, he also said he didn't do much. "I'm the guy who eats all the doughnuts all the time." The models, flattered with the atten tion, ended the evening with a T-shirt auction -- the ones they were wearing of course. It raised $580. Six lucky women were the recipients of a chorus of Happy Birthday courtesy of the firefighters. But for some who attended, the cal endar models really didn't have to say or do anything. "Seeing those guys without their shirts was the best part," said Alison Labb, a Grade 10 student at Q.E. Park and a waitress at the Firehall. PUBLIC HEALTH SEMINAR How Can You Prevent Diabetes? Top, right, Lynn Eplett was also happy to have her calendar signed by Sean Alexander (Mr. June) during last Friday's special launch held at the Firehall Cool Bar, Hot Grill in Bronte. Space was tight, and the lineups to meet the 11 continued to build through out the evening. Many didn't want the party to end. Cover model, Jason Raymond agreed. "It's different because it's for a good cause, and it's a lot of fun," said Raymond has been a firefighter for seven years.
