With this fall's federal election looming, the Tory nomination in this newly-created riding has proven a hotly-contested job. Burlington City and Regional Councillor for Ward 6 Blair Lancaster announced her bid for the nomination Saturday morning to a group of supporters at the Purple Heather Pub, in the heart of her ward. "It's a natural progression for me given my background and the types of things I've done to support the community," she said. Lancaster previously served as the director of the Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital Foundation and was vicechair of the board at Sheridan College. She is the outgoing executive director of Breast Cancer Support Services. Lancaster has lived in the community for 30 years, a claim, she said, her competitors cannot make. No stranger to politics, Geoff Pollock made it known last Friday he's also running for the Tory nomination. In 2013, Pollock was the Conservative candidate in the federal byelection for Toronto Centre. The Liberals' Chrystia Freeland won the riding and Pollock came in third behind the NDP's Linda McQuaig. Pollock, a Toronto-based real estate lawyer, said he is drawn to public service, having been a former officer in the Canadian Army Reserves. Pollock said the most pressing issue facing the constituents of the riding is the economy. He said building on what the Conservative government has accomplished economically is essential, pointing to job growth and a forecasted balanced budget. "There is a reason why we are called the Conservative Party," Pollock said. "We're a party that believes in fiscal conservatism, fiscal prudence and somebody who will manage the finances of the country." Pollock said he is looking forward to moving to the riding with his wife and two young children. Another experienced candidate, Nina Tangri announced Sunday she also is pursuing the nomination. She ran unsuccessfully in the last provincial election for MississaugaStreetsville, where she currently lives. The investment adviser describes herself as a community activist who believes in volunteerism.
