"The last couple of years have been hard," said O'Neill. "A lot of people gave because they wanted to help, but a lot didn't give because they didn't want to give money and then us go out of business and the money gets lost. "We couldn't apply for grants the first year because we weren't financially stable." According to O'Neill, KSM has climbed out of a financial hole and, in 2014, reported no accounts payable overdue and a small surplus. It costs close to $100,000 every month to keep the Dream Centre's doors open, said O'Neill, and KSM is once again reaching out to the community for help to continue to serve the less fortunate of Oakville. For instance, O'Neill said a family of four can donate a $1 or $2 a day and if 1,000 families do the same, it all adds up. "It means the financial burden for each of us is small, but the impact for us as an organization is huge," he said. With the new and improved KSM off the ground, O'Neill also wanted to address some misconceptions about the role religion and Christianity plays in the organization. He said he's heard from some people that KSM is too religious and is trying to convert people to its denomination. He says this couldn't be further from the truth. "We are a faith-based organization," he said. "We believe it's our faith in Jesus that gives us love and compassion. That's why we do what we do, but we're focused on the practical and tangible care." O'Neill said KSM has big dreams moving forward with hopes of guiding clients to selfsufficiency -- to proverbially teach them to fish.
