Over 85 per cent o f all collision s are caused by driver error. In order to keep out o f c o llis io n s , you need to know what is going on around your vehicle at all tim es." A ccording to a recent study done by the U n iversity of North Carolina, H ighw ay Safety R esearch Center, driver distraction in its various forms contributed to an estim ated 20 to 20 per cent o f all collision s. Alm ost 30 per cent of the distraction-related crashes were attributed to som ething outside the vehicle - person, object, event. Adjusting a radio/cas sette/C D accounted for 11.4 per cent. Other vehi cle occupants such as children or conversations with passengers were blamed in 10.9 per cent o f the incidents. Eating or drinking led to 1.7 per cent o f distrac tion-related collision s and 1.5 per cent in volved using a m obile phone. "W here use o f c e ll phones w hile driving is still legal, we recom m end using a hands-free unit," says Christianson. "Frequently used tele phone numbers should be preprogrammed. If you do not have a hands-free unit, then pull over to place or answer calls. A lso, never look at a passenger when speaking - it's not polite to crash!"
