The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday November 20, 2002 - B11 New coordinator plans to foster ties with business Improved networking, increasedfundraising activities included in Oakville Arts Council' s goals By Liz Campbell SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER The Oakville Arts Council's annual meeting, held at the Central Library Auditorium last Wednesday, drew some 60 people to hear reports from the board and applaud the winners of its Above and Beyond Awards. The council ended the year with a $25,000 deficit according to Charles Havill, C.A. but the President, Tim Godfrey was optimistic that this sum would quickly be filled through grants and fundraising projects like the annual Mayor's Awards Gala next May. Executive Director Grace DeLottinville described the many activi ties in which the Oakville Arts Council has been involved during the past year including such major exhibitions as the recent Fibre Arts Festival and the upcom ing Film Festival. The council recognizes local artists and supporters through several awards programs including the Mayor's Awards for Business, Sheridan Student Awards and Above and Beyond Awards. Through a grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation, the Oakville Arts Council has been able to hire CJ Martin in the role of Community Partnerships and Development Co-ordinator. Her role will be to increase fundraising activities as well as build stronger links between the council and the business community and between members themselves. This year, too, the council launched its Web site: www.oakvillearts.com. funded by Bell Canada. The hope is that this site, which has already had more than 80,000 visitors, will be a source of information about artists and art events for the community. In addition, its news magazine. Arts About Town, published six times a year, serves as a one-stop resource describing local artists and listing upcoming events. And, finally, the council has created a brochure which will be available shortly in order to promote its work. Four new board members were intro duced to the audience. Marcia McCann, a chartered accountant, has been actively involved in teaching in a number of Ontario colleges and runs her own firm, Marcia McCann & Associates in Mississauga. Jody Sanderson is a local councillor in her second term and serves on several local boards including the Oakville Centre for Performing Arts and the Town Budget Committee. Meera Sharma opened Oakville's first and only Indian fabric store and is involved in var ious community organizations such as Big Sisters of Oakville, the Halton Multicultural Association and Literacy Council. Randy Smye is a professor at Sheridan College and is an enthu siastic participant, both backstage and in the limelight, of theatrical groups such as The Oakville Players. These four join the 10 returning members on the 2003 board for the Oakville Arts Council. The business meeting was fol lowed by a presentation of the Above and Beyond awards to eight local supporters of the arts. Then the audience was treated to performances by two groups of young people. Students from the Canadian Caribbean Association, aged 3-10, presented a display of drumming, and a second group of costumed dancers aged 12-18 performed to island rhythms. A quartet from the Southern Ontario Chamber Music Institute (SOCMI) presented two selec tions of music. The four young people ranged in age from 13-15 and performed a Mozart Divertimento on violins, viola and cello. SOCMI trains talented young string and piano students in the fine art of chamber music and holds an annual summer pro gram in Oakville. Tim Godfrey is entering his second year in the chair and is enthusiastic about creating more opportunities for members of the Auts Council to network. "Visual artists tend to work alone so we would like to do more to enable them to get together," he said. "The members have said they would like to get to know each other." One initiative Godfrey is anx ious to promote is the creation of an arts centre in Oakville. "Burlington, Etobicoke, Mississauga all have a space where local artists can rent space for a reasonable price," he says. "It would mean members could hold public events and it would be a focal point for the arts, help ing us to bring artists together." Fnday at Sovereign House, a group of six local lc Starting Friday artists will show work they created while on a painting trip to Charlevoix, Quebec this September.
