B4 - The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday November 27, 2002 Celebration of Hope raises $20,000 for cancer research `Live well, laugh often and love much.' This favourite expression of the late Ted and Beth Hallet was brought to life recently at the Celebration o f Hope fundraiser held at the Chisholm Centre. The charitable event, attended by 185 ticket holders, raised nearly $20,000 for the Oakville Unit of the Canadian Cancer Society. It was organized by Katie Hallet, who shortly after her marriage earlier this year, lost both of her parents from cancer within five months of each other, and her co-worker at KPMG in Hamilton, Amy Bernstein. Both women are in their mid-20s. Their initial goal was to pay tribute to Katie's parents and raise $5,000. But, with only 10 weeks of planning, and supported by their families and friends, the two staff accountants at KPMG managed to raise almost four times their goal. Cancer has no age, gender or ethnic restraints and the recognition of these facts was evident at the fundraiser. It was truly a coming together of a variety o f generations and backgrounds. The celebration featured classical musicians, an upbeat disc jockey, wonderful food and drink, plus a silent and live auction o f more than 100 items. The disc jockey services were donated by a childhood cancer survivor, the Chisholm staff co-ordination was com pleted by a staff member who is currently in hospital for can cer treatment, and there was large contingent of cancer sur vivors at this event. The solicitation o f items, set-up and clean up were han dled by the Hallet and Bernstein families and friends. The two women are witness to what can happen when one puts their mind to a task. To see the pure joy in their faces, as the success of the night was evident, brought a proud smile to all who know Katie and Amy. If ever a grassroots events was successful, it was surely the Celebration of Hope, say the organizers supporters. The Celebration of Hope's main sponsors were the Chisholm Centre, KPMG and BDO accounting firms, Bell Mobility and Four Seasons Hoteis. Amy Bernstein, left, and Kati$ Hallet organized Celebration o f Hope, held recently at the Chisholm Centre and raised close to $20,000. % F i n i a 1s f UNIVERSE We would like to cordially invite you to our first Christmas Open House on Saturday November 30.
