C2 - The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday November 27, 2002 Hisey ranked 21st in preliminary NHL draft list By Neil Becker S P E C IA L T O T H E B E A V E R It was a hectic weekend and a hec tic month for Oakville's Rob Hisey, whose new Ontario Hockey League team, the Erie Otters, managed a 2-2 tie with the Mississauga Ice Dogs at the Hershey Centre on Sunday. Hisey made his presence known, finding the open ice and dominating the face-off circle. He was kept off the scoreboard but had two shots on goal and almost connected on a two-on-one break in the third period. For the Otters (9-11 -2-1/21 pts), they'll take the tie on the road, being their third game in as many days after splitting a couple at home -- a 3-1 win on Saturday over the cellar dwelling Sudbury Wolves (5-21-1-0/11 pts) and a 1-0 loss on Friday to the high flying Sarnia Sting (16-5-2-1/35 pts). Erie, the defending OHL champs, are back in the GTA this Friday, 7 p.m., against the St. Michael's Majors (13-10-3- l/30pts). Hisey, 18, is on a better than a point a game pace, this year, with 10 goals and 19 assists (29 points) in 28 games. He was also their rookie of the year last season with 20 goals and 33 assists (53 points) in 68 games. Hisey was traded to Erie in a block buster six-player trade earlier this month. This past weekend, the NHL's first preliminary rankings for the 2003 NHL entry draft also conveyed some great news -- he was among the OHL top-25 (21st). "Every game there are scouts, but you just have to block it out and help the team win," commented Hisey, in an interview following Sunday's game. "At the end of the year, I just want to go to Nashville (where the NHL draft is) and get drafted." It will be a far cry from the Hershey Centre, a few years ago, where Hisey anxiously waited to see if he would get drafted into the OHL. Because of his small size, he wasn't scooped up until the ninth round where he was selected 182nd overall. "I was really nervous and excited," he said in regards to being selected at the draft. "I really wanted to play in this league." Hisey immediately showed promise with an awesome campaign in tier two junior A hockey with the Aurora Tigers where he had 27 goals and 41 assists (68 points) in 49 games. The Sault quickly signed him, end ing any speculation that he might choose the NCAA route. Hisey will, no doubt, be able to get invaluable insight into the NHL from his new roommate, Carlos Colaiacovo, who was returned to Erie earlier this month from the Toronto Maple Leafs. "He has really been helping me on and off the ice and encouraging me to become a better player," said Hisey. "Since he came back (from the Leafs), he has given us a big boost both on the ice and in the dressing room. He knows what it takes because he has been there."
