The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday November 27, 2002 - A 5 Project example of Canadian generosity (Continued from page 1) "It was very clear there was a real need," he said. ZENON's ZeeWeed tech nology. features membranes that contain pores a mere 0.035 microns in size and act as barri ers to microorganisms that are 10 to 100 times larger. The membranes remove the microorganisms outright -- not kill them to leave dead or par tially dead organisms in the treated water. ZeeWeed is effec tive for everything from Cryptosporidium to E.coli. Imrie said this latest project came about after ZENON cus tomer Glen Prentice -- a California Vietnam veteran, who has been back to that coun try several times and donated to charities like orphanages -- contacted the Oakville compa ny with a brainstorm. "He said `I know where you've got to go!'" said Imrie, who first met with Prentice in person at Los Angeles Airport before they headed off together to Vietnam for nine days. ``It was an amazing experience." Production manager Tom MacNaught said ZENON employees feel great about the work they do for paying clients so Water For Humanity is sim ply icing on the cake. "This goes one step further," said MacNaught, who will be travelling to Vietnam for the plant's installation. "This is a real good news story." The volunteers took about a year to complete the project, a job that should take only eight or nine weeks under ordinary circumstances. ZENON pilot project manager Kristi Alexander explained that one interesting wrinkle to the effort was the opportunity for desk bound employees like her to cut pipe and read diagrams in order to learn more about their busi nesses. "It was a lot fun," said Alexander. "That's why we all contributed to this worthwhile cause. A lottery will also be held among the volunteers with the winner accompanying the purification plant to Vietnam. Alexander would be in the run ning, but she's taking a sixmonth leave to travel the Far East where she hopes to make it to the Quang Dien District for the plant's arrival. The plant itself is housed in a container that will be sent to Vietnam by ship with freight costs paid for by Wilson Logistics. "This is a real demonstration of Canadian generosity," said Benedek, who is committed to a third Water For Humanity project. Rotary Internet auction extended to 1 a.m. Sunday Anyone who tuned in to the Oakville Rotary Auction last weekend on COGECO 23 knows we were experiencing some difficulty with our new bidding software package. While we could talk about hubs, ports and servers to explain the problem, the bottom line is we crashed. Just into the first segments. The Internet alone received tens of thousands of hits within the first half hour, and our system just couldn't handle the volume. That's the bad news. The good news is that time any bids you may have already submitted have been recorded. We are also transferring the major Items of this year's auc tion - the six-month lease on the Jeep Liberty from Lockwood Chrysler; the two luxury vaca tions from Travel Choice/American Express; and the pool table, hot tub and patio furniture set from Beachcomber Hot Tub & Home in Oakville to the Internet so you can still bid on those as well. Be sure to check with www.oakvillerotary.org often this week, and place your bids. Full details of any changes will be posted there. Bidding has been extended until 1 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 1. You will be able to place Maximum Bids (just like eBay), so the computer can act as your proxy while you sleep! We would like to thank all of the viewers of the 2002 Oakville Rotary Auction for their under standing and patience. -- Submitted by Jennifer Kay, a member o f the Rotary Club of Oakville Trafalgar, in charge o f marketing arui promo tions for the auction.
