The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday November 27, 2002 - A7 Photocopying violates spirit of students' volunteer service requirement By Paula Henriques 0/\K V IL L E B EA V ER STA FF Robert Michaels Fri. MEIDIA PAR TNER Students photocopying teachers' papers may earn some brownie points, but they shouldn't earn any credits towards their required 40 hours of vol unteer work. It was revealed last week that at least one high school in Halton, Nelson High School in Burlington, had been granting volunteer hours for students photocopying work for their teachers. But according to Dave Ross, the senior media relations co-ordinator for the Ministry of Education, photocopy ing papers for teachers violates the spir it of the provincial legislation. Ross said he didn't believe photo copying was the kind of activity the Ontario government had in mind when it passed a regulation three years ago requiring high school students to per form a minimum 40 hours of volunteer work as a prerequisite to graduating. "Community involvement is a very specific responsibility. They provide expanded opportunities for learning. It (photocopying) doesn't follow the spir it of the intent," he said. One Iroquois Ridge High School Grade 13 student agrees with the Ministry of Education official, but said that photocopying as credit is not an issue at her school, mainly because stu dents aren't allowed in the photocopy Bronte tree lighting Saturday night The Village of Bronte is holding its annual Christmas Tree Lighting ceremo ny on Saturday night. The ceremonial lighting will take place at 7 p.m. at the Etcetera, Etc. Restaurant at the comer of Lakeshore Road West and Bronte Road. John Breakey, President of the Oakville Chamber of Commerce, will connect the tree lights. The Walton Memorial Church Choir, under the direction of Linda Fletcher, will lead a carol sing-a-long. Santa Claus will also be present to hand out treats for the children. Hot chocolate and cookies will also be served. room. "If you help your teacher by photo copying you are not learning anything. The whole point of the new curriculum is to become more active in the com munity," said April Fong, a Student Trustee on the Halton District School Board, and co-chair of its Student Senate. Even though the new curriculum doesn't affect the OAC students, Fong has seen the added stress that it has put on the younger grades. "They are trying to get their marks up because of the double cohort and trying to find the time to volunteer as well. Part of the problem is also that some schools don't promote volunteer opportunities." She said that there are many oppor tunities at school besides photocopying that can apply, like fundraising events and food drives. "There are so many volunteer opportunities at my school. Volunteer organizations will also come to the school and ask students to get involved, and teachers are really good at posting volunteer jobs on the boards." She indicated that the opportunities are out there, students are just not seek ing them out, or taking the curriculum seriously. "Students are now realizing it's their last year to do it, and they are scram bling to find hours. It's their last year to do it, and it's hitting them,' she said. "Another problem is that Grade 12 students aren't taking it seriously. Because they are the first ones to go through the new curriculum, they are the Guinea pigs. They think it might change again." A long-tim e volunteer with the Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital, she said new volunteers usually stay on after completing their 40 hours. "These volunteers find that they really enjoy it. It's a positive thing. It helps students connect with the com munity," said Fong. "In my own expe rience I've learned life skills, and that's something you can't learn in the class room." -- With files from Tim Whitnell, Burlington Post. Call CLASS ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT UPDATE ELTON PARK STORM DRAINAGE STUDY NOTICE OF PUBLIC INFORMATION CENTRE The Town of Oakville is in the process of updating the Environmental Study Report (ESR) for the Elton Park Storm Drainage Study, completed in 1991 (ref. Map). The original report was filed with the Ministry of the Environment, and approved for construction. The update study has been initiated as a legislated requirement for Class Environmental Assessments that are not implemented within 5 years of the original filing date. The study involves producing an addendum to the 1991 ESR, reviewing the planning process, approved solution and design, to ensure that the project and mitigating measures are still valid, given the current planning context. The project is being planned under Schedule B of the Class Environmental Assessment for Municipal Projects. Public comment was invited this past June, and since that time the Study Team has undertaken a site inventory of environmental conditions, and has updated the hydrologic model based on changes to the study area that have occurred over the past eleven years. Based on this information, a set of alternative solutions has been prepared and evaluated against social and physical environmental factors. This information will be available for review at a Public Information Centre to be held: Date: Time: Location: December 5, 2002 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Short Presentation: 7:00 p.m. Town of Oakville- Municipal Building Committee Rooms 1 and 2 1225 Trafalgar Road Anita Kellv or Elena Clarke (905) 842-0794 Public input and comment are invited on the study findings for incorporation into the final planning and design of this project and will be received until January 4, 2003. Subject to comments received and the receipt of necessary approvals, the Town of Oakville intends to proceed with the design of the initial phase of this project in early 2003, and construction in 2004.
