Mercedes-Benz 10K crowns seventh new race champion Seven years in, the Mercedes-Benz Oakville 10K is still looking for its first repeat champion. Burlington's Fred Karanja became the annual 10K's seventh overall winner, finishing the race in 34 minutes, 2.4 seconds to top the field of 914 runners. Oakville's Eric Labelle was second, crossing the line 28 seconds behind Karanja while Milton's Barry Dalton was third to complete an all-Halton podium. Lucy Njeri, remains the race's only two-time winner, taking first in the women's race in 2010 and 2012. Caledon's Lisa Bentley took the title this year with a time of 39:15.8, finishing a minute ahead of Toronto's Rosalind Smye Morton. Heather Sinclair of Toronto was third in 40:23.3. Last year's winner, Anna Parker, was the top Oakville runner. She placed fifth in 42:58.2. Eight Oakville runners took first place in their division, led by Labelle, who topped the men's 2029 division. Local runners swept the two youngest age divisions. Soren Zamuner won the men's 14-andunder division and was 27th overall. His time was 41:33.8. Ryan Rudderham took the men's 15-19 division with a time of 44:42.5 to place 34th overall. On the women's side it was Brittany Pan winning the 14-and-under division in 45:06.5 while Sarah McClure edged Taylor McMahon by two seconds to win the women's 15-19 division in 48:06.4. Pan finished 49th overall while McClure was 91st. Debra Lazaro won the women's 50-59 division in 47:53.5 to place 89th overall. Spencer earns bronze at world U18 Oakville's Matt Spencer won a bronze medal as Canada defeated Switzerland 5-2 Sunday at the IIHF Under-18 World Hockey Championships. Canada built an early 3-0 lead but the tournament hosts scored twice in the final three minutes of the opening period to cut the lead to one. Spencer set up Glenn Gawdin midway through the second period to stem Switzerland's momentum and Canada added an insurance goal two minutes later. Spencer, a defenceman for the Peterborough Petes, finished the tournament with two assists in seven games. Canada went 4-0 in round-robin play, beating Latvia 11-6, Switzerland 4-1, the Czech Republic 3-2 and then overcoming a 2-0 deficit to edge Finland 3-2. Canada topped Sweden 5-3 in the quarter-finals before falling 7-2 to the U.S. in the semifinals. The event, scheduled from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., will feature sport dem- onstrations and the opportunity to speak to ambassadors for various sports offered within the community. Children will be able to try out many different sports, from batting practice to speed skating. Glenn McLay turned in a time of 38:35 to take first in the men's 50-59 division to win by more than two minutes. Chris Ziomkiewicz captured the men's 60-69 division title. His time of 47:51.4 put him in 85th overall. Feric helps Patriots win second Buckland Cup Oakville's Nathan Feric won his second straight Buckland Cup with the Toronto Lakeshore Patriots. The Patriots beat Kingston 6-1 last Wednesday in Game 7 of the Ontario Junior Hockey League final. The 20-year-old had nine goals and 28 points in 35 games for the Patriots this season. Feric had points in five of the seven games in the series and finished the OJHL playoffs with five goals and 13 assists in 23 games. The Patriots are now playing in the Dudley Hewitt Cup, the Central Canadian Jr. A championship, in Fort Frances. Toronto lost its opening game of the four-team tournament 2-1 to the host Lakers.
