The Oakville Beaver, W ednesday N o ve m b e r 6, 2002 - C3 STRIDE puts lives back on track One out of every five of us will at some point be diagnosed with a mental illness. Many people diagnosed with a men tal illness have successful careers and normal family and social lives before their illness strikes. Take Gary for example. Gary, 50, lost his wife to cancer. Soon after, he lost his job when the plant he worked for shut down, and he subsequently Gary lost his house and his car. With no previous history of mental illness, he wound up living on the street, and final ly found himself in the psychiatric ward of the hospital where he was diagnosed with manic depression. Because of the stigma of having a mental illness such as schizophrenia, anxiety, manic depression or a personal ity disorder, the unemployment rate among the seriously mentally ill is 85 per cent. However, the life of someone living with a mental illness can be trans formed forever by something that most of us take for granted - a job. Having a meaningful job gives all o f us a reason for leaving our homes every day, and for those with a mental illness, also a reason for taking their medication and for socializing with others in the com munity. The only organization of its kind in Halton, STRIDE (Supported Training and Rehabilitation in Diverse Environments) provides employment support to people living with a mental illness. For those who are ready to enter or return to work, STRIDE offers skills assessment, job search training and job preparation. STRIDE also operates worksites throughout Halton where people can develop work skills in a structured environment that reflect what they will experience in the competitive workplace. Gary joined the STRIDE program five years ago as a worksite participant. He regained his confidence, met some one to share his life with, and found employm ent in a salaried position. With STRIDE'S help, Gary got, his life STRIDE, established 20 years ago, is one of the 36 agencies supported by United Way of Oakville. This year, United Way of Oakville's campaign goal is $3.3 million. For more informa tion about STRIDE, please call 905693-4252. The wonderful items you will be bidding on are really only part of what the Auction is all about. The Rotary Clubs of Oakville West, Oakville North and Oakville Trafalgar are committed to numerous community projects and are dependent upon the success of fundrais ing events like the Auction. Often, their efforts are often behind the scenes and relatively unknown to all except those directly involved with the projects. We thought we would bring you up to date on some of the great things the Clubs are doing in our local communi ties. Last week, we started with Oakville West. This time, w e'll look at Oakville North and Oakville Trafalgar. A big project for Oakville North for the past couple^ of years has been The Club, an after-school tutoring initiative with Big Sisters. Offered to boys and girls in Grades 3 to 8 who need some help with their studies, the students are paired with high school students and adult volunWorld in Orlando, Florida. The group meets at the airport at 5 a.m. on the appointed day, and join hundreds of other children to fly down south via Air Canada to spend the day fulfilling many dreams. Another organization supported by both Clubs is Halton Women's Place, a local shelter for abused women and their families. In addition to financial support, the Clubs look after setting up families in new homes and giving them some much-needed support once they are on their own. O ther Oakville North projects include the Big Brothers/Big Sisters Soap Box Derby, Halton Family Services, the Kerr Street Ministries, Hope House, the Youth Drop-In Centre, and DARE. In addition to the Youth Drop-In Centre, Oakville Trafalgar also supports two Interact Clubs for young people; the Rotary Youth Leadership Award program; and local scholarships. O f course, none of this would be possible without our Auction Corporate Sponsors. On board this year are Avalanche Communications, COGECO 23, Flippance & Carr, Lockwood Chrysler, National W ireless, Roblar Enterprises, TD Canada Trust, The Oakville Beaver, and Tim Hortons. Be sure to watch The Oakville Beaver just before the Auction for the official catalogue and plan your bid ding. Jen n ife r Kay handles m arketing and promotion fo r the Auction, and is a m em ber o f the Rotary Club o f Oakville Trafalgar. O a k v il l e R o t a r y A u c t i o n teers from our community. Oakville Trafalgar is also behind the program. Both Oakville North and Oakville Trafalgar are ardent supporters of Dreams Take Flight.
