Most recently, was the addition of former Blade, 17-year-old Lane Moodie, who suited up for Oakville for the first time this season on Friday night, as they hosted the Hamilton Kiltys. Moodie, who had a great opening weekend with the Blades with a goal each night, spent a season with the team two years ago, and was one of the top rookies in the league. After just one season in the league, Moodie was drafted 14th overall by the Ontario Hockey League's Ottawa 67s, where he played last season, before being traded to the Owen Sound Attack this summer. Starting the season with the Attack, Moodie decided to return to Oakville to rejoin the Blades, bringing with him a lot of depth, which he showed during this weekend's match ups. "It was nice to see Lane contribute right off the bat," commented Jay Anderson, who originally had a hand in recruiting Moodie to the team two years ago. "He is going to add so much to this team. Lane is a quiet leader, but will contribute offensively as well as being a physical presence on the ice." This weekend was an interesting story for the Blades who lost six play ers as well as Coach Anderson to sus pensions after Friday night's physical affair with the long time rival Kilty B's. Although Hamilton walked away from Friday's game with the upper hand, getting a 5-4 win, it was a very strong showing for the Blades, who fought right to the end. The main highlight of the game was the five-on-five brawl that occurred during the second period, costing the Blades the services o f for wards Marc Pinizzotto, Geoff Aselstine and Dan Powers and defenders Demitri Semenov and Tyler Woodisse. With the exception of Pinizzotto, who was given a four game suspen sion, each player, as well as Anderson, was handed a two game ticket to the stands, where they would be joined by Mike Ruberto who was given a sus pension of his own later on in the period. To make matters worse, Will Barlow and Steve Pinizzotto were out with injuries, and Kevin Harvey was ejected from the game before the first (See 'Blades' page D3) Barrie Erskine · Oakville Beaver It's close quarters for these unidentified players from Milton Merchants and Oakville Blades (dark jersey) in provin cial junior A hockey action from Saturday night. And in the championship game, the Bruins appeared to be on their way to an encore runaway, with a 41-29 lead at the half. But after being bloodied for a game and a half, the visitors from Kingston managed to pick themselves off the mat and completely turn things around against their now overconfident and lethargic hosts, to earn a surprise 86-78 tournament championship victory. St. Lawrence went on a 14-2 run to start the second half to tie the game at 43-43. A shocked Sheridan rallied for their own 8-2 run to regain a 51-45 lead with 12 minutes remaining. From there on, however, it was all St. Lawrence who came back with solid outside shooting to put away Sheridan, the defending provincial champions, and grab the win. "They were well prepared," said Bruins head coach Jim Flack. "They took us out of a few things we like to do. "But also we didn't hit anything from the field or the free throw line and you won't win anything doing that." Jordan Morrison, a tournament all star and the only Bruin to show up to play in the final, scored 25 points. David Martin scored 13 and Vance King, another tournament all star, added 11 . Nathan Tucker was red hot from the outside for St. Lawrence. He drained three second half treys to finish with 23 points and was named tournament MVP. In Sheridan's other preliminary round games, they beat Loyalist 82-53 (Jordan Morrison 20, Vance King 13) and Sir Sanford Fleming 114-22 (Terrill Bynoe 18, Ian Robinson 17 and Bashir Musse 15). The Bruins' preseason record sits at 7-4 which includes a fourth place finish at the always competitive Dawson tour nament in Montreal. The Bruins beat Dawson 91-62 (Vance King 19) and Champlain 91-78 (Kevin Dennis 21) but lost to Vanier 83-69 (King 23) and Montmorency 76-73 (Kevin Dennis 18). The Bruins then blew a 15-point halftime lead and lost the bronze medal game 83-81 to Humber (Dave Martin 22 ). The Bruins continue their pre-season schedule with trip to Pennsylvania this weekend to play division III Pittsburgh Bradford and Penn State Behrend. # GOAL TENDERS 30 DAN GIFFIN 31 ANTHONY SANTAGUIDA MATT PIKE JACOB DUDEK 35 CHRIS HYK · Does not include Monday night's MIN.
