ANDREW CATHOLIC ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS NOVEMBER 2002 At the April 2, 2002 meeting, trustees of the Halton Catholic District School Board approved a senior staff recommendation to proceed with an attendance boundary review process to consider the redirection of the new growth areas immediately east of Eight Line to St. Andrew Catholic Elementary School. Board staff with be meeting with the respective school councils in the immediate future to outline the review process and establish a School Boundary Review Committee (SBRC). The SBRC will develop options and interim recommendations with respect to preferred boundary revisions. These will be presented to the St. Marguerite d 'Youville and St. Andrew School Communities at an open house at which time input will be requested. It is expected that final recommendations will be presented to the Board for its approval no later than February 2003. Any Board approved boundary revisions will be implemented for September 2003. Information on the school boundary review process and future meetings will be forwarded to the school community. As well, this information will be available by accessing the. Partnerships between educators and private business are the only way to relieve the shortage of skilled trades workers, agreed members of a speaker panel organ ized by the Halton Industry Education Council. Through promotion of the skilled trades within the schools and co-op/apprentice ship programs at businesses, students gain a better understanding of their career options, including the often over-looked trades, said Dr. Dusty Papke, Director of Education for the Halton District School Board. "We have a cultural problem. We really do have a bias in our culture in terms of apprenticeship and trades. They are often seen as lesser than university and college, but they're not," he said at the Granite Ridge Golf Club in Milton last Thursday. "Because of the need (for skilled trades workers), I believe this will change, but it's going to take time," he said. There's nothing new about the idea of partnerships between these two groups. Drury High School student Natalie Blythe shared those sentiments, saying her co-op with Madison Chemical Inc. has taught her more than any textbook could. "I've learned more about myself and the workforce everyday through this educational experience," she said. Without apprenticeship and co-op pro grams, as well as financial contributions from the business sector, Sheridan College would quickly run out of steam, added Dr. Robert Turner, president and CEO of the college. "We exist to link students to the work place," he said.
