Thomson said the test was available world wide at the time, however the Canadian govern ment dragged its feet and "did absolutely nothing to screen peo ple. Thomson attended the Nov. 20 Toronto press conference with his father Robert where the RCMP (Royal Canadian M ounted Police) announced charges against four doctors found responsible for the tainted blood scandal following a mas sive five-year criminal investiga tion. It is believed about 10,000 people were directly or indirectly infected with tainted blood or blood products before the mid1980s. Of that number, an esti mated 2,000 victims have died. The RCMP began its investi gation into the tainted blood scandal shortly, after Justice Horace Krever released his report. Krever recommended that all victims of Hepatitis C from tainted blood be compensated and was critical of those respon sible for Canada's blood supply. However, the federal govern ment decided in March 1998 that only those infected with Hepatitis C through tainted blood between 1986 and 1990 be compensated and has since stood firm despite opposition calls to open it up to include all victims. "It's nice to see they are final ly holding somebody responsi ble," Thomson told reporters at the Toronto press conference. "But I'd like to see them focus on compensating some of the vic tims." During an interview at his home - Thomson lives with his parents "who are going through this with me" - he noted the four doctors were charged for "the deci sions they made at the time. "They should instead have been charged based on the number of people they infected," he said. "There are a lot of people who have not tested and don't know if they've been infect ed, but it's believed to be in the thousands."
