So it's somewhat o f a surprise that, last weekend at the Oakville Curling Club, was actually the first time they actu ally won the `A' side of the regional play downs! This year, the `B ' side was won by a team skipped by Holly Nichol from the Bayview Country Club. The Oakville Curling Club had another rink qualify for last weekend's regionals. Cathy Parker's rink finished 1-2. The `A' side of the junior men's competition was won by John Epping and his foursome from the Toronto Granite Club. The `B ' side was won by Patrick Russell's team from St. George's. The four teams will compete at the junior provincial championships to be held in Brantford, Jan. 7-12. The winners then move on to the national junior champi onships which will be held in Ottawa in early February. The Oakville Curling Club will host next year's junior provincial championships. And for the second year in a row, the Oakville Curling Club has been chosen to host the 2002 M&M M eat Shops Skins, December 27-29. The top eight teams in Canada will compete for $100,000, an increase of $25,000 over last year. Friday night saw two of the Blades get hat tricks -- rookie Charlie Giffin and assistant captain Rob Tarantino. Tarantino, who was the player of the month for October in the provincial jun ior A west division, has seen his fair share of three-goal games so far this season. In fact, this is his fifth hat trick with the Blades this year, and that's helped propel him all the way up to second overall in league scoring with 60 points (36 goals and 24 assists) in 31 games, behind only Josh Soares of Hamilton with 75 points (38 goals, 37 assists) in 30 games. Charlie Giffin, younger brother of goaltender Dan Giffin, is playing his first season with the Blades. It has been a bit of a rough ride for Giffin who spent a chunk of the early part of the season out with a .broken collarbone. Since his return, however, he has shown much improvement in his game, proving him self to be among the top rookies. Other goal scorers for the night were Mike Ruberto (2), Nick Davis, Marc Pinizzotto, Brad McKenzie and Will Barlow. It was a big victory for the Blades not only because Mississauga is hot on their tails in the western division standings, but also because it was the Chargers' 104 win over the Blades that started their seven-game losing slide earlier in the season. "The one thing we took from last season was that how you finish is more important than how many games you are winning in the regular season," said head coach Jay Anderson. "But the wins do help the confidence of this team. "At points during the last season and a half, there was a feeling of this team not being able to lose. We haven't had a lot of that this year. So, any chance we can get to boost our confidence is cru cial." Carrying the intensity from Friday's win into Saturday night's match-up against Bramalea helped the team skate to another win. W ith recently acquired Matthew Tanel between the pipes, Bramalea has managed to jum p a bit in the standings. But the Blades managed to solve the puzzle of the 6'6" goaltender, getting five goals past him. Mike Ruberto had another strong outing, getting two more goals for his squad. Ruberto is second in the Blades' scoring race with 52 points (22 goals and 30 assists). "We're playing- amazing hockey right now," commented the forward who had 10 points in total for the week end. "We're jelling and playing as a team Barrie Erskine · Oak\'ille Beaver The Oakville Blades Paul Metcalfe mixes it up Friday night in the Blades 12-4 win over the Mississauga Chargers. with all the lines producing, and we're getting the results that we want." The Blades hope to carry this inten sity even further as they head into a very big weekend, playing back-to-back games with the Georgetown Raiders. After a bumpy season start, the Raiders are currently sitting in third place, six points ahead of the fourth place Blades, with three games in hand. This home-and-home series will be played in Friday in Oakville, and Saturday in Georgetown. As the defending provincial champions and national finalists, the Bruins didn't want to start the season off at 0-2, even though their opening loss, also on the road, was to the defending national champion and arch rival Humber Hawks. The Bruins host their home opener against Seneca Sting this Friday, 7:30 p.m., at the JM Porter gym in Oakville. A special event $5,000 shoot for the rim con test will be held at half time. The league then closes down for the Christmas break. The Bruins were dominant, inside, against George Brown. The Bruins actually trailed 22-19 midway through the first half but a Vance King trey keyed a 14-2 Sheridan run and a 39-33 lead at the break. The Bruins never trailed in the second half and a 14-6 run buried the host Huskies for good and the Bruins cruised home for the win. "We really did an excellent job inside," said coach Jim Flack. "That really was the story for us offensively." Jordan Morrison led the way with 20 points while freshman Terrill Bynoe added six points to lead the Bruins domination under the basket. Dave M artin added 13 points and Damian Paratore came off the bench to drill a couple of three pointers and also finish with 13 points. Vance King scored 11 points. Wayne W illis replied with 14 points for Sheridan.
