Tribute to Holbrook takes women on emotional journey in Europe continued from p.12 Liberation of the Netherlands. Vanessa, who works as a family nurse practitioner in Oakville, said she is looking forward to this year's ride, noting that last year's was deeply memorable. She said the pair formed deep bonds with the people they were rode with in 2014. Members of their group included former Canadian soldiers who had served in Afghanistan and told the sisters stories about their experiences. "One individual told us about how they had ordered a bomb to go off," said Vanessa. "What ended up happening was a father came and brought his child who unfortunately was hit by this bomb. They came to the gates where these soldiers were sleeping and woke this individual up and said, `Look what you did. You hurt my son. I thought we were friends. I thought we were on the same side.'" The sites they visited also made an emotional impact on the sisters, with Vanessa noting it was impossible to visit a place like Juno Beach, where Canadian soldiers came ashore to liberate occupied Europe, and not be moved. "I don't think we talked a lot," said Vanessa. "It was more of an emotional journey we experienced and took home with us." In addition to paying tribute to their grandfather, Vanessa said they are also riding to raise awareness of Wounded Warriors Canada and the work they do. Following the first ride, Vanessa volunteered her time at several Wounded Warriors fundraising events where she learned more about their programs and met individuals and families who have benefited from them. Some of these programs include Can Praxis Equine -- a PTSD therapy session for veterans and their spouses, which centres around the training of a horse. Another program, called COPE, features couples PTSD therapy. The sisters must each raise a minimum of $4,000 for Wounded Warriors Canada by May 1 to participate in this year's bike ride. Vanessa has succeeded in raising $3,660 so far while Natasha is at $2,570.
