www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, May 1, 2015 | 56 Despite injury, Matheson named to World Cup team Even though she is still rehabilitating knee and foot injuries that could prevent her from playing, White Oaks high school grad Diana Matheson was named to Canada's roster for this summer's Women's World Cup. The 31-year-old midfielder, whose goal in injury time lifted Canada to a 1-0 win over France in the 2012 Olympic bronze-medal game, tore the anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee during a friendly last fall versus Japan, and broke a bone in her foot in March. "Our goal is to have her back playing in the tournament," said Canadian head coach John Herdman. "She's very clear that if there were any chance she wouldn't have been able to play, I know that from her perspective she wouldn't have taken a shirt." Canada opens play as World Cup hosts June 6. Matheson can hand her shirt in 24 hours before the start of the tournament if she is unable to play, though Herdman said Matheson is on the team for more than just her playing abilities. "Her health won't impact the leadership role she plays off the pitch," Herdman said. -- With files from Laura Armstrong, Toronto Star Westlake helps Canada to 3-0 start at sledge worlds T.A.
