www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, May 8, 2015 | 4 Document found in a book about Churchill's letters continued from p.1 The letter then indicates the MP would be sent a leaflet and pro-Nazi book, which he may want to read. Its closing salutation reads: "In AngloGerman Friendship very sincerely yours Th. Kessemeier." "I picked up this letter and I was reading it and I got to this one paragraph and I thought `What the heck?,'" said Ken Auden, co-president of the Oakville Literacy Council, who discovered the document. "To come across something like this, in this day and age... I was astounded. There were a number of people in the room and I called them over to see it." The letter was found inside one of the 8,000-10,000 books, which have been donated by members of the public for the Oakville Literacy Council's used book sale fundraiser that began yesterday (May 7). The book sale is being held at the QEPCCC at 2302 Bridge Rd., and continues through Sunday (May 10). The sale will be held from 10 a.m.-8 p.m., today (Friday) and 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Saturday and Sunday. The books were donated between April 23 and May 6 with the letter found inside a book called the Chartwell Bulletins, a collection of letters from British wartime Prime Minister Winston Churchill to his wife. Auden mused the letter probably belonged to someone who had forgotten about it inside a book they donated. History professor weighs in York University History Professor Michael Kater discussed the piece of history Auden has stumbled upon. He noted that before the start of the Second World War, the Nazi propaganda machine, of which the Deutscher Fichte Bund was a part, worked diligently to counter stories being told abroad by Jewish refugees who had been driven out of Germany and Austria by Nazi persecution. The letter makes clear the purpose of the agency, through wording used in its letterhead. Information about the organization online said it also sent translations of Adolf Hitler's speeches to interested parties around the world. Kater said it is ironic such a letter would be sent to a British MP less than a month before Germany invaded Poland, starting the Second World War. He hypothesized hundreds of similar letters went out during this period as part of the Nazi regime's attempts to smooth relations abroad. He also said there was no shortage of Nazi sympathizers around the world. "There were many in England, and also America, who were impressed with the economic and social progress Germany had made since the Depression... and anti-Semitism was rife in England as much as in the United States," said Kater. "Many British MPs sympathized with the Nazis, and Sir Oswald Mosley very officially led the British Union of Fascists." Auden has no idea whether the letter is worth anything, stating it was folded so it would fit inside the book it was found in. He said the Oakville Literacy Council has yet to determine exactly what to do with it. Buying? Selling? Re-financing?
