www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, May 14, 2015 | 18 National Adoption Weekend aims to find forever homes PetSmart Charities of Canada is hoping to find some furry friends a forever home during its National Adoption Weekend starting Friday (May 15). Between May 15-17, the event takes place at PetSmart stores across Canada where animal-welfare organizations will be on-site at each store to help pets find homes and visitors find their perfect match. "While the May long weekend marks the unofficial start of summer, it also marks the start of kitten season, a very busy time of year for animal shelters across the country," said Bill McDonald, of PetSmart Charities of Canada, in a media release. "As the weather warms up, there is an increase in the kitten population as more stray cats have litters. As a result, animal shelters and rescue groups across the country intake hundreds of newborn kittens looking for forever homes every spring. "Shelters struggle to keep up with the influx of homeless kittens and are looking for a solution." Adoption centres inside any PetSmart store in Canada will be open from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Friday and Saturday (May 16), and 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Sunday (May 17). Last year's adoption weekend saw more than 3,000 homeless pets across Canada find homes. "PetSmart stores donate space to more than 100 animal welfare groups to encourage adoptions and help solve our nation's pet overpopulation crisis," said Rob Smith, regional director of PetSmart Canada, in the release. "The pets find lifelong, loving homes and our customers get to meet them in a friendly retail environment."
