Cancer Cadets hope Oakville Relay will help find a cure in their lifetime by Abigail Cukier Special to the Beaver 9 | Thursday, May 21, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com After tagging along with her big sister to the Oakville Relay for Life event for three years, Alex Hadfield now leads her own team, the Cancer Cadets. "I loved the activities and met a lot of people and listened to their stories," said the 13-year-old, who attended Relay for Life with her sister Cherese, now 21. A few years ago, Alex and six friends decided to participate together. "Each year, people saw what a great time we had and how great a cause it was and wanted to participate," Alex said. This year, 17 Grade 7 students from Mother Teresa Catholic Elementary School will be part of the Cancer Cadets team. Last year, the Cancer Cadets was the top youth team, raising $6,000. This year, they hope to top that total. Relay for Life participants walk or run around a track passing a baton to fellow participants and working together in the fight against cancer. Survivors' Victory Lap In addition to food, entertainment and cancer prevention information, the event includes a Survivors' Victory Lap and a Fight Back Ceremony, where participants make a commitment to fight against cancer in their Cancer affected many of my friends and family. Luminaries also line the track to provide inspiration for those taking part in the noncompetitive relay. The luminaries bear the names of someone who has won or lost their battle with cancer or carry a message meant to encourage participants. Funds raised through the relay and luminaries, go to the Canadian Cancer Society for research, support programs for people with cancer and their caregivers and to raise awareness. Last year, more than 400 Oakville residents participated in the 12-hour overnight fundraiser, helping raise nearly $158,000 for cancer research. Peter and Paul Parish grounds on Dundas St. W., Friday, June 19.
