Blue Devils rally to remain unbeaten by Herb Garbutt Oakville Beaver Staff Anthony Doran couldn't have envisioned a better start to the season, but Sunday afternoon he discovered there is a downside to success. Doran scored in the 88th minute to give the Oakville Blue Devils a 3-2 victory over ProStars FC but had to watch the final minutes from the sidelines when he was injured after his teammates mobbed him after his goal. You could forgive his Blue Devil teammates for their exuberance. Oakville looked to be headed toward its first League1 Ontario soccer loss, trailing 2-1 in the waning minutes and down a man. But in the 85th minute, Anthony Novak's good work on the wing was rewarded when his cross was headed home by Doran to tie the game. "To be honest, I've been playing since I could walk and that's the first header I've ever scored on," Doran said. "I thought it saved us some points." It would do more than that. Three minutes later Doran and Novak teamed up again, this time with Doran shielding the ball from his opponent before drilling it into the back of the net. The win improved the Blue Devils to 3-0-0 and rewarded a crowd of 275 at Sheridan College. "It's hard to get support, but now that the Blue Devils are back, people know who they are," Doran said. "We've had two good turnouts and so we just have to keep winning." Doran said he could see the team showing promising signs in its preseason games. "I've been surprised with the chemistry," Doran said. "It is a mix of players but we've all played with each other somewhere at some point in our careers. Tyler Wason I've played with since we were young in Oakville. Over my career I've probably played with 80, 90 per cent of the guys. We're just lucky that all these groups of guys who had played together all got along and gelled." That was never more evident than the way the team responded Sunday afternoon. Adrian Butters scored off a corner kick to give Oakville the lead in the 33rd minute but ProStars tied it up late in the half -- the first goal surrendered by the Blue Devils this season. Just two minutes into the second half, Nick Muth was called for a hand ball on the Blue Devils goal line and was ejected for his second yellow card. ProStars then capitalized on the resulting penalty kick to take the lead. "I think Nick was feeling bad for putting us in a bad situation," said Doran, who admitted the team wasn't playing its best to that point. "But we probably should have thanked him. It lit a fire under us." Doran said the team will need to carry that kind of play into this Sunday's road game against Vaughan Azzurri, the only other team with a perfect 3-0-0 mark. Nyhuis nets winner as Buzz edges `Hawks Jake Nyhuis scored midway through the third period to break an 8-8 tie in a 10-8 Oakville Buzz win over the Mississauga Tomahawks Friday. Eddie Renaud, who had two goals and five assists, added an insurance marker as the Buzz improved its Ontario Jr. B lacrosse record to 3-5. Equalling Renaud's output was Keyan McQueen, playing in his first game of the season after finishing his college season. McQueen erased a 7-5 Mississauga lead late in the second period with goals 17 seconds apart and Jaden Walcot added another, 36 seconds later, to send the Buzz into the third up 8-7. Walcot, who had a hat trick, scored twice in the first four minutes as the Buzz opened up a 3-0 lead in the first four minutes of the game. Adam Wolf had a goal and two assists and Michael Dobko scored a power-play goal. Bailey Brown recorded the win. 47 | Thursday, May 21, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Jake Nyhuis of the Oakville Buzz is checked into the boards by Mississauga's Gave Zozzo during Friday's Ontario Jr. B lacrosse game.
