www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, May 22, 2015 | 12 CPR and defibrillation by the public crucial in cardiac arrest outside hospital by Bob Mitchell Oakville Beaver Staff Halton's continued promotion of CPR training is crucial, especially after a 2013 report indicated Halton adults with less education and lower incomes were also less likely to be CPR-certified or trained in PAD (Public Access Defibrillation). According to an update from Hamidad Meghani, Halton's Medical Officer of Health, to the Regional Health and Safety committee this week, the 2013 Rapid Risk Factor Surveillance System report revealed these adults are also less willing to do CPR or use a cardiac defibrillator. Last year the Halton Region Paramedic Services, according to Meghani's report, trained 1,402 people in CPR. Those included Regional staff, Halton police and local school board staff. Interlocking & Concrete Specialists A total 526 AED (Automated External Defibrillator) units are in public facilities throughout Halton, but while 59 per cent of adults have seen them, the report said only a third knew anyone could use them in an emergency. Paramedic Services has been promoting CPR and PAD training since 2000. Stats indicate CPR and PAD promotion is as important as early CPR and early defibrillation in increasing survival rates after a cardiac arrest. Paramedic Services has partnered with the Halton Multicultural Council and Halton's prenatal nutrition program participants to further educate adults. The report stated early activation of paramedics via 911 is very important for cardiac arrest patients and several medical studies suggest CPR by bystanders plays an important role in treatment of cardiac arrest outside a hospital. The number of cardiac arrest patients receiving bystander CPR in Halton rose between 2004 and 2010, but has remained at 34-39 per cent since 2010. Of the 221 people, receiving resuscitation in 2014, 75 had CPR from a bystander and only six had AEDs applied to them. The PAD program sees AED units in municipal facilities -- arenas, pools, libraries and recreation centre -- as well as in Conservation Halton parks, Sheridan College, GO stations and schools. Many private facilities also have AED units -- golf courses, stores and fitness facilities.
