The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday December 18, 2002 - D3 Defending OMHA champs show a lot of bite at Bulldogs tourney The Oakville Rangers midget AAA rep team came home w ith the gold m edal from the Hamilton Jr. Bulldogs Stoney Creek Tournament Dec. 6-8, defeating the Brampton Battalion 7-0 in the final. Coach Shaw n Hudson was particularly pleased with the composure and self-discipline that the players showed in the final. "The guys resisted the temptation to retaliate for all o f the clutching, grabbing and stick work that the Battalion threw at them. "Our players followed the game plan to the letter, executed the systems very well and were rewarded with several power play opportunities that turned out be pivotal in the win." Actually, the Rangers had to dig deep within themselves to even advance to the final game. In their semifinal match against the Don Mills Flyers, the Rangers were behind 3-2 with less than a minute remaining in the game. With goalie M att Pike on the bench for the extra attacker, Josh Smyth buried a Steve Turner feed to complete his hat-trick and send the game into overtime. In the second overtime period, Smyth found A1 Lee all alone in front of the net and Lee picked the top com er for the 4-3 victory. The Rangers earned their spot in the playoff round with two wins and a loss in round robin play and advanced to the semifinals as second place finishers in their pool. H ere's a recap: OAKVILLE 7, Brampton Battalion 0 (cham pionship final): the Rangers special teams capi talized on their chances with three power-play goals and a shorthanded marker. Game MVP Daniel Hannigan-Daley scored the Rangers' first goal, the eventual game winner, midway through the first period and ended up with two goals and two assists. A1 Lee also potted two goals while Jeff Vaive, Josh Smyth and Jeff Nabeta added singles. Marc Richardson, Andy MacDonald and Vaive picked up a pair of helpers. Dan Ringwald. Jeff Bentley, Mike Chereshnevsky, Jeff Nabeta and Jordy McMillan added singles. Matt Pike stopped all 15 Battalion shots for the shutout. OAKVILLE 4, Don Mills Flyers 3, double overtim e (semifinal): Josh Smyth threw the Rangers on his broad shoulders and carried them to the final. Smyth scored all three Ranger goals, including the game-tying marker with 50 seconds left and set up A1 Lee's game winner midway through the second overtime period. Steve Turner set up a pair while Brock Pawliw, M ike Chereshnevsky, Marc Richardson and Smyth added singles. (Round Robin play) OAKVILLE 6, Markham Islanders 1: the Rangers came out flying and skated to a 6-0 lead before losing the shutout late in the third period. A1 Lee led the goal-burst with a hat trick. Josh Smyth, Jeff Nabeta and Graham Tough also found the twine for the Rangers. Dan Ringwald and Jordy McMillan helped out on three goals each. Brock Pawliw, Steve Turner, Marc Richardson, Daniel Hannigan-Daley and Ben Heersink picked up other assists. OAKVILLE 8, Welland Tigers 3: Steve Turner led the attack with a hat trick and an assist. Marc Richardson, Jeff Vaive, Jeff Bentley, Graham Tough and A1 Lee also scored for the Rangers. Daniel Hannigan-Daley and Jeff Nabeta chipped in with three assists each. Singles w ent to Richardson, Bentley, Andy MacDonald, Brock Pawliw, Dan Ringwald and Mike Chereshnevsky. J.D McNamara picked up the win between the pipes. Cambridge Hawks 3, OAKVILLE 1: the Hawks, the top team in the Alliance, were fight ing for their playoff lives and the hungrier team came out on top. The Hawks scored a shorthand ed goal with one second left in the first and then went up 2-0 on another giveaway early in the second. Moments later, Josh Smyth (from Brock Pawliw and Steve Turner) made it close and then J.D. McNamara stopped a couple of breakaways to keep it close. The Hawks controlled play in the third period to cement the victory. (OMHA hosts) At this age level, Oakville has won the last three O ntario M inor Hockey A ssociation (OMHA) championships, and will be hosting again this season.
