The Oakville Beaver, Friday D ecem ber 27, 2002 - B9 Fantastic first tournament The Oakville Hornets novice A rep team had a fantastic first tournament at Kitchener Fallfest. Unbeaten in the three preliminary games the team advanced to the semifinals where they picked up another win. The final contest played in `The Aud' against rivals Burlington ended in a 2 - 2 tie after regulation time. Oakville's two goals were scored by Laura Medlock and Leah Burke. Still undecided after an overtime period, the teams went on the play five additional two-minute periods using the player reduc tion format. Five on five players was followed by four on four, until two periods of two on two were played. Anxious fans watched these tired teams continue with a shootout. This exciting game was finally ended with a 2-1 Burlington shootout win. · Oakville's goal was scored by Laura Medlock. Goalie Jenna Zurawell was named second Star of the Game. Strong offen sive play shown by Katherine Karthaus, Kimberly Lesiuta, Lindsay Logan and Madeline Warner contributed to Oakville's tournament success. Two major events close out sports year The sporting year comes to a close with two major events kicking off today in Oakville. RICHARD BELL MEMORIAL The Richard Bell M emorial hockey tournament is the biggest ever this year with more than 100 teams, and it runs Friday to Monday. "We would especially like to welcome (Valkommen) the Danaderyd/Enebyberg teams from Sweden, as well as all our American friends from as far away as Boulder, Colorado," said Kim Cucoch, the chair person. The tournament includes four `minor' divisions -- minor atom, minor peewee, minor bantam and minor midget. And all three levels are included -- A, AA, AAA (with the exception of minor atom AAA). The Oakville Rangers, of course, are fielding teams in all 11 divisions. The tournament should have no shortage of highlights. The premier minor midget AAA division are in their draft eligible year and there will be plenty of scouts on hand. And the minor midget AA division has far flung teams from Boulder, Colorado and Danderyd, Sweden (also represented in minor midget A division) to spice things up. Wolfpack, took top spot in a tournament in Stayner over the Dec. 7/8 weekend. The boys won the championship game 6-1 over Barrie. The team had also won all three of its preliminary round games, 4-1 over Barrie, 4-0 over Brampton and 5-1 over Whitby. It was a great weekend for the team which has also hit the top of the local league ladder. Coaches Brent Windlinger and Robert Steele praised the boys for their great team spirit and sportmanship.
