Halton schools go unplugged for wireless laptop pilot project By Tim Whitnell SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER Musicians go `unplugged' to strip down their sound to a simpler form. Some Halton District School Board school classes are going unplugged to make learning simpler. Eight elementary and high schools in the region are taking part in a pilot project that utilizes wireless laptop technology in the classroom. The wireless laptops are portable and connected to a high-speed Internet service so students can expand their learning, moving from the traditional chalkboard to the computer monitor for note taking. In Oakville, White Oaks Secondary School, Oakville-Trafalgar High School and Iroquois Ridge High School are involved in the project. Some OT students have been using wireless technology for nearly three years. The high schools use Compaq Notebook laptops while the elemen tary schools utilize Apple iBooks. Each participating school in Halton gets 16 laptops which are stored in a cart in the classroom. The cart has computer hardware hooked up to the Internet. The laptops use the Airport program. Bob Tadman, a Grade 8 teach at Burlington's C. H. Norton, one of the participating schools, team teaches on the wireless laptops with his daughter, Beth Hudson, a Grade 7-8 teacher. Tadman said the iBook is last year's technology with a 20-gigabyte hard drive, a 700 megahertz proces sor and 128 megabytes of RAM. The 11-year teacher at Norton said the wireless technology is invaluable in instructing his students. "It's integrated into everything, as a research tool, a publishing tool and a presentation tool." At a school board presentation this fall, Tadman explained the advantages of the technology to trustees. "They're not just sharing ideas but they're connecting with each other," he said of students using the laptops. The fact the units are portable appeals to the young users, who otherwise would have to book time in their school's busy computer labs. Tadman said he'll be part of an upcoming presentation to board officials in updating the pilot project. He said it is supposed to end in June 2003 with a board eval uation to follow.
