www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, May 28, 2015 | 38 Last-minute goal denies Aquinas Halton soccer title By Kevin Nagel Metroland Media Group For a few minutes, it looked like Ella Grif n was going to play the role of giant killer. "It was pretty amazing," the Grade 11 student said of her goal with three minutes to play in Monday's Halton senior girls' AAA soccer nal. "We were all pretty tired. It's the best time to score, but unfortunately..." Unfortunately, Burlington's Notre Dame Fighting Irish, with its 10 Halton titles in the past 12 years, found an even better time to score. And then another. Nakita Scho eld scored on a 35-yard free kick to tie the St. Thomas Aquinas keeper Jessica Harraway beats Nicole Gomes to the ball but pays the price for making the save as the Notre Dame player tumbles over her in Monday's Halton senior girls AAA soccer nal. Notre Dame scored in the nal minute to tie the game and then won 2-1 in overtime. | photos by Graham Paine -- Oakville Beaver and The Car-Free Street Festival!!! BMFA Reduce Reuse Recycle game at 1-1 with about a minute remaining in regulation time and Jesse Davis scored the winner with a golden goal in the second 10-minute overtime period to secure the Halton crown. Notre Dame came into the game with a perfect 8-0 record, having surrendered just two goals all season. But Aquinas managed to shut down an Irish team that had averaged 3.3 goals per game. The Raiders had also won a Halton championship last year, taking the AA title. Moving up to the AAA ranks this season, Aquinas went 4-1-2 to nish third in the league, then beat Iroquois Ridge 4-1 in the quarternals before upsetting second-place Corpus Christi 1-0 in the semis. The Raiders looked poised for an even bigger upset when Grif n scored. She put a hard shot at the Notre Dame net that was blocked by an Irish defender. The ball came right back to Grif n, who didn't waste a second chance, beating Notre Dame goalie Callie Agro. The lead would be short-lived, though. At the STA bench, Raiders coach Justin Yantho wasn't dwelling on negatives. "It was tough but the game was great and I can't ask too much more of the girls in a game like today," he said. "It was just unfortunate we made two or three errors at the wrong time. And the (tying goal), there was nothing our goaltender could do about that." That goal was courtesy of Schoeld, the talented striker who has decided to forego her scholarship offer from Miami of Ohio and stay in Burlington for another year. Davis, who was yellow-carded for shoving an opponent after missing on a scoring opportunity in the second half, completed the Irish comeback by depositing a ball hit into the crease area by teammate Megan Sullivan. One Irish player missed the loose ball but Davis was also in the vicinity to take care of business The Raiders' Brooke Robertson, who had a couple of glorious opportunities to score, ri ed a shot off the crossbar with about 10 minutes to play in regulation. "As a Grade 11 (student) she had a big jump in her play from Grade 10," said Yantho of the team's top scorer, who averaged more than a goal a game this season. "Brooke put in a lot of work with her rep team and on her own to become a better player." Robertson and Grif n will both be back for another run at a Halton title, but Grif n said it was the players who won't be returning that motivated them in Monday's game. "We came in knowing it was going to be a tough game," she said. "For a lot of the girls, we knew it could be their last game. It was the seniors we were playing for. It was great to play so well. I'm proud of our team." --with les from Herb Garbutt, Oakville Beaver staff Best Buy CORRECTION NOTICE NEWSPAPER RETRACTION FOR THE BEST BUY MAY 22 CORPORATE FLYER In our May 22 flyer, page 8A, we incorrectly advertised the Nikon Coolpix L840 digital camera (WebCodes: 10362206, 10362207) for the price of $229.99 with savings of $70 each.
