The Halton Regional Police Service Board heard a presentation by Acting Superintendent Jeff Corey last week (May 21) about police preparations for the major sporting extravaganza. The Pan Am/Parapan Am Games, which will run from July 10-26 and Aug. 7-15, respectively, are expected to bring 8,000 athletes to the Greater Toronto Area along with approximately 25,000 tourists. Halton will see some of these numbers with Corey anticipating the Cisco Milton Pan Am/Parapan Am Velodrome track cycling events alone will draw sold-out crowds of approximately 1,600 people. These events will occur over a four-day period (July 16-19) for the Pan Am Games and a two-day period (Aug. 10-11) for the Parapan Am Games. Milton will also host a cycling time trial (July 22 for the Pan Am Games and Aug. 13 for Parapan Am Games) while Burlington's City View Park will serve as a practice venue for Pan Am soccer teams (July 5-25). While Corey wouldn't say exactly how many security personnel would be working to keep order at these Halton events he did note the numbers are substantial.
