www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, May 29, 2015 | 16 Police expect July 22 to be the busiest day in Halton continued from p.9 "Certain peak days, we have a substantial number of staff... The day we will have the biggest amount of staff will be for the Pan Am time trials on July 22. That will be our biggest day." On July 22, Halton police will also be able to call on public order units from the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) or the Toronto Police Service, if problems arise. Private security personnel from Contemporary Security Canada (CSC) have also been retained for local events. "We're not anticipating any problems here, but we plan for them," said Corey. "Tragically, bad things have happened at largescale sporting events in the past, but we have the training and the expertise, and the plans in place, to make sure our venues are swept ahead of time and then essentially locked in so we know there is no risk to the safety of any athletes, officials or spectators during that game, whether that is an indoor facility or an outdoor facility." Corey said once a venue is thoroughly checked and determined to be safe, police would place 24-hour security on that venue to keep it that way until the competitions are over. Police will also be screening vehicles seeking to enter the Pan Am and Parapan Am venues. Officers will also conduct security patrols at the venues, during the evenings while the games are on, and will assist private security personnel in screening ticket holders. Corey said the biggest challenge for police would be securing the 20 kilometres of Milton roads needed for the time trial. He said police would sweep these roads and check all the areas around them with experts, including explosives disposal staff. "We have plans in place where we will have staff throughout that entire course," said Corey. "We have also put out an awareness piece to members of the community, so they know the roads will be closed during that time period... It is going to be a fun event." The time trial event will begin at the SEXUAL ASSAULT & VIOLENCE INTERVENTION SERVICES OF HALTON 26th Annual General Meeting June 11th 2015, 7:00 - 9:00pm Guest Speaker: Stephen Soucie Location: Suite 208, South Oakville Centre (new office) RSVP at 905-825-3622 or savis@savisofhalton.org If you are interested in joining our Board of Directors please contact Ruth Perkins at Board@savisofhalton.org Velodrome with the athletes travelling south on First Line, then east on Lower Baseline Road, north on Fourth Line and finally, west on Louis Saint Laurent Avenue, looping back to the Velodrome. Corey said 20 officers are currently taking a course on spotting suspicious behaviour so that if protesters arrive at an event like the time trial, officers will be able to spot them and stop them, if they try to do something like block the highway. For the track cycling events at the Velodrome, Corey said there would be offsite parking, which he noted, would give police an opportunity to get a look at people as they are boarding shuttles to the event. This will also give officers a chance to tell people to leave bags and other prohibited items behind before they get to the actual doors of the Velodrome. see Province on p.28 visit our new location in oakville open year round! 1515 Rebecca St. Corner of Rebecca & 3rd line "Formerly DiversiFieD Financial services" 800-HRBloCk | HRBLOCK.CA we don't miss a thingTM Buying?
